thank me for being there,” said
Norton. "I don't get many thank-
yous while I'm working in my
patrol car," he chuckled. .
"Most of the people I deal
with have problems, whether it's
the victim or the criminal," he
continued.
"If I worked for a large
department, 1 would want to be
a mounted patrol officer full-
time. My favorite two things
, about working in law-
enforcement are working as a
mounted patrol officer and
working with children," said
Norton.
In 1996, over 1,500 situations
occurred involving the elderly,
hunters, and youth, where a
search and rescue unit was
needed by Texas sheriffs and
police departments.
Mounted units were needed
with regard to mounted
assistance because several
factors limited the use of units
by police departments and or
sheriffs offices.
According to Norton, there
was a situation involving a lost
girl a few years back, that
initiated the implementation of
mounted patrol in Panola
County. "We had to call in
mounted patrol officers from
Harrison County to assist in that
particular case. After that we
decided that it would be a good
idea to have a mounted patrol of
our own," he said.
Many people with horse
interests wanted to assist law
enforcement agents and enhance
community safety, but were not
sure of what they could do or
how they could do it They
people. These units can be seen
at events such as football games,
softball tournaments, rodeos,
— walk-a-thons, concerts, Texas
Country Music Hall of Fame
and other school functions.
Mounted officers have been
used in man hunts and search
and rescues (usually lost people rescue, should contact one of the
in wooded areas Alzheimers
patients, and hunters).
Panola County Mounted
Patrol has also assisted other
counties in all of these events.
The patrol is a
organization that operates from
donations from the community.
Panola County does carry
insurance on the horses, but the
owners are responsible for the
upkeep of their own animal.

The final matter on the
Panola County mounted
patrol has a few more hands
thanks to local volunteers.
According to Norton, about
11 people have volunteered their
time and animal to help benefit
