THIS WEEK'S ScHBDVll
Bi-district

Division II
Kilgore (7-3) vs. Terrell (6-4), Fri-
day, Tiger Stadium, Terrell, 7:30
Henderson (6-4) vs. Jacksonville
(9-1) Friday at Henderson, 7:30
Roberts for a 47-yard strike.
Then Strong bolted five to the
end zone with 8:53 left in the
first period.
Carthage would throw just
four more times in the remain-
ing 34:53, even when things be-
gan to get out of hand at half-
time with Hallsville building on
a 23-7 lead.
It was pretty painful to watch
the Bobcats dismantle the Red
Machine piece by piece by
piece.
A nine-play, 75-yard drive
after the first Carthage kickoff
was halted when the Dawgs fi-
nally got their act together on
their six yard line to force a field
goal. Jonathan Lawrence made
it easily.
It was on the ensuing kickoff
by Hallsville that the Dawgs
were really embarrassed.
No one wearing red seemed
to know it was a free kick, any-
body's football, and so while the
receiving team watched it bound
around and roll to the Carthage
18, the Bobcats were in hot pur-
suit. It was like taking candy
from a baby.
Muckelroy ran for seven,
Dallas for eight and three and
there went the Carthage lead. In
a matter of 59 seconds,
Hallsville scored twice and went
on top, 10-0.
The Cats got a little cocky
shortly and ran on third and
fourth downs trying to make
three yards, to no avail, Yewrist
Deramus and R. T. Dukes play-
ing a key role on defense on
four down. When the Dawgs
failed to get a first down, after a
penalty, Jose Lopez pinned
Hallsville back to its three with
a booming 49-yard punt.
It did not appear Carthage
put much effort into the next
play, but Muckelroy sure did as
he broke into the secondary al-
most untouched and outran ev-
eryone in sight 97 to the TD.
There wasn't a lot of fight left
in Carthage after that. Hallsville
drove 61 yards to score on a
Dallas run of four with 56 sec-
onds left before halftime, missed
a field goal in its first possession
of the third period and then

Dawgs' Kneipp causes Chris Heflin (4) to fumble, setting up Carthage's only TD against Hallsville
over Henderson, put the Bobcats
on the sideline for the 2001
playoffs.
Carthage came in with an
eight-game losing streak and
wasn't going anywhere, but by
losing it set a modem day school
record as the only team since
World War II to lose every dis-
trict encounter.
Hallsville beat the Dawgs up
every way imaginable: first
downs were 25-4, yards rushing
were 367-69; yards passing were
139-47; and return yards were
68-26.
So weak was the Carthage ef-
fort that it could average just 4.3
yards per kickoff return, when it
wanted to return them at all.
Brandon Strong came into
the game as the district's leading
runner and had a lot of chances
to improve as he carried the mail
22 times. Hallsville knew
Carthage would not win passing,
or that it would even try, so it
stacked the deck against the
Dawgs' rushing game and shut
Strong down to just 47 yards, a
2.1 average.
He did manage the team's
only touchdown, which was set
up by a fumble near mid-field.
Die bobble came on a punt re-
turn when Chris Heflin was sep-
arated from the ball by Rusty
Kneipp with teammate Frank
Drummond recovering ‘ at the
Carthage 48.
