Northwest Hospital in Austin.

She was a teacher, and was pre-
ceded in death by her husband,
Bob Horton, who died April 15,
1997.

Enterprise, she was the daughter
of Edward and Lidie Langford
Jenkins. The family moved to
Carthage in 1955 and immedi-
ately joined First United
Methodist Church and the
Gleaners Sunday School Class.
She lived a long and fruitful life
and was known by relatives and
friends as a giving, friendly per-
son always doing for others with
total unselfishness.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson
said, "Though we travel the
world over to find the beautiful,
we must cany it with us or we
find it not.” She lived the 23rd
Psalm, but she always thought,
"The Lord is my shepherd, 1
have everything I need." She
was preceded in death by her
husband of 59 years, Bertram E.
Broach; and daughter, Dorothy
Jean McDonald.
Survivors include her
daughters and sons-in-law, Betty
and Donald Vernon, of Houston,
and Martha and Harlan Jordan,
of Brookhaven; sons and
daughters-in-law, Pascal
Broach, of Tyler, and Rodney
and Maria Broach, of Houston;
sister, Louise Rusk; 11 grand-
children; eight great-grandchil-
dren; many nieces, nephews and
other relatives.

arrived at Pearl Harbor on Dec.
8. He retired from Union Oil in
Nederland, and was a member
of the Gary Masonic Lodge, the
Carthage Order of Eastern Star
747 and a member of Eastside
Baptist Church for the past 23
years. He was preceded in death
by his parents.
Survivors include his wife,
Madeliene Smith Nichols, of
Gary; son and daughter-in-law,
Jerry and Cathy Nichols, of Port
Neches; daughter, Fredna
Nichols, of Jonesboro, Ark.;
sister, Mildred Greenroyd, of
Amarillo; brother-in-law and
sister-in-law, Paul and Dorothy
Smith, of Nederland; special
sister-in-law, Irene Campbell, of
Gary; grandchildren, Dayna and
Wyatt Withers, of Buna, and
Lauren Nichols, of Port Neches;
great-grandchildren, Jace
Nichols and Addison Withers;
and several special nieces and
nephews.

Wilson, 87, of Carthage, were
held Feb. 10 at Ricks-Bowers
Funeral Home Chapel in
Teague. The Rev. Paul Gauntt
officiated. Burial followed in
Union Cemetery in Teague un-
der the direction of Rick's Fu-
neral Home. Local arrangements
by Lipsey Family Funeral Home
in Carthage. She died Feb. 8 at
Panola Care and Rehabilitation
in Carthage.
Bom Nov. 24, 1914 in Free-
stone County, she was the
daughter of Joseph Mattliew and
Ella Rae Goulding Keys. She
was a homemaker, and had lived
in Beckville since 1996 moving
here from Teague. She was a
member of the 8th Avenue Bap-
tist Church in Teague, and was
preceded in death by her hus-
band, Chelsey Ottis Wilson,
who died July 3, 1994.
Survivors include her son and
daughter-in-law, Mike and Mar-
ilyn Wilson, of Beckville;
daughter, Helen Janelie Dearing,
of Houston; grandchildren, John
Christy and JoAnne Christy, of
Houston, Jimmy Christy, of
Baton Rouge, Michael and Mark
Wilson, and Marie and Michelle
Wilson, all of Beckville; great-
grandchildren, Alyssa, Catherine
and Johnny Christy, of Houston,
and Matt Scott and Chris Mer-
riam.

"Nick" Nichols, of Gayy, were
held Feb. 7 at Eastside Baptist
Church. The Revs. P.A. Dubose
and Dale Walker officiated.
Burial followed in the Gary
Cemetery under the direction of
Jimerson Funeral Home. He
died Feb. 4 in a local hospital.
Bom Dec. 22, 1915 in Mem-
phis, Texas, he was the son of
John and Cleo Bennett Nichols.
He lived in Nederland for 30
years and in 1978 moved his
family to Gary. On June 1, 1945
he wed Madeliene Smith, of
Gary. They were married for 55
years, and proudly served his
country in the United States
Marines for 13 years during
World War II obtaining the rank
as Gunnery Sgt.
Carthage, and Jennifer and
Richard Harris, of Clear Lake.
Abo surviving Dukes are her
Ponthie step-grandchildren and
their spouses, Ross M. and
Grace Ponthie, and Neil C. and
Jessica Ponthie, all of Alexan-
dria, and John F. and Shan
Ponthie, of Shreveport; numer-
ous great and great-great-grand-
children, step-great, and great-
great-grandchildren; many
nieces, nephews, and a host of
friends.

Louie Deasmon Gage, 73, of
Quitman, father of Carthage
resident Joe Gage, were held
Feb. 12 at Liberty Baptist
Church in Hawkins. The Rev.
Stanley Whittaker officiated.
Burial followed in Liberty
Cemetery under the direction of
Beaty Funeral Home in
Hawkins. He died Feb. 9 in a
Tyler nursing home.
Bom August 9, 1928 in Big
Sandy, he was the son of the late
Tom and Eron Eaton Gage. He
was the current pastor of Maple
Springs Baptist Church, and was
a carpenter. He had served as a
pastor for more than 40 years,
was a 32nd Degree Mason with
the Hawkins Masonic Lodge,
and served as a board member
of the Fouke Water Supply. He
was a private pilot, licensed bar-
ber and loved farming. He
served in the United States Air
Force during World War II, and
was preceded in death by his
first wife, Hazel Maxine Gage;
nine brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife,
Emmaline Gage, of Quitman;
Steve C^gJ^^hl^ckey^Gaff’
both of Hawkins; daughter,
Teresa Neel, of Hawkins; sis-
ters, Mary Yandle, of Hawkins.
Lois McBrayer, of Big Sandy,
and Doris Wetherby, of Gilmer;
eight grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Blanche
F. Dukes, 90, of Alexandria, La.,
formerly of Carthage, were held
Feb. 12 at Hawthorn Funeral
Home Chapel. The Rev. Bobby
Earl Moore officiated. Burial
followed in Odd Fellows
Cemetery under the direction of
Hawthorn Funeral Home. She
died Feb. 9 in Alexandria.
Bom April 18, 1911 in Clay-
ton, she was the daughter of
John I^iird and Sudie Alexander
Fleming. Sher married R.T.
Dukes on Feb. 28, 1937 and
they celebrated 43 years of mar-
riage before his death on August
5, 1980. She was a longtime
member of Southside Baptist
Church and O.E.S. Carthage
Chapter #747 and Rebekah
Lodge. She was a loving home-
aker whose greatest joy came
from the love of her family.
Survivors include her
daughter and son-in-law, Margie
Dukes and Finley Ponthie, of
Alexandria; step-son and his
spouse, Bobby W. and Shirley
Dukes, of Conroe; ^ranchildren
and their spouses, Dr. Leigh
Ellen Eubanks and David Stew-

She had been a member of St.
William of Vercelli Catholic
Church since moving here in
1975.
Letter was active in the St
Vincent DePaul Society, and
had been employed as a techni-
cian at Panola General Hospital
for 25 years. She loved working
as a substitute teacher for
Carthage Inependent School
District. She enjoyed reading
and was a devoted mother and
grandmother. She was preceded
in death by her brother, Carl
Brown; and two infant grand-
children.
Survivors include her hus-
band, Donald J. letter, of
Carthage; sons and daughters-
in-law, David and Shona Letter,
of Carthage, and Dennis and Di-
ana Letter, of Las Vegas;
daughters, Dannette Whitaker,
of Carthage, and Deidre Robert-
son, of Lake Cherokee; and
brothers, Bill Riley, of Red Oak,
and Donnie Riley, of Grand
Prairie.
Also surviving Letter are her
sisters, Nora Sullivan, of Mans-
field; sister-in-law, Pat Brown,
of Arlington; grandchildren, Jes-
sica Letter, Chase Letter, Lagren
Whitaker, Rollen Robertson,
Savannah Letter, Dylan
Whitaker, Riley Robertson,
Davi Jeaux Letter, Shyenna
Letter, Kristi Whitaker and
Kevin Whitaker; and a host of
friends.

Funeral services for Richard
J. "Dick" Taijick, 65, of
Carthage, were held Feb. 11 at
Jimerson Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. Dale Reed, and Bros.
Tommy Marshall, Billy
Shoffher and Aaron Bequette of-
ficiated. Burial followed in
Restland Memorial Park under
the direction • of Jimerson Fu-
neral Home. He died Feb. 9 in a
local hospital.
Bom Dec. 8, 1936 in Pitts-
field, Mass., he was the son of
Helen Daoust. He was married
to Reba Hataway Tarjick for 43
years, and proudly served his
country in the United States Air
Force during the Vietnam War.
After serving his country for 16
years, he retired as a Tech. Sgt.
and was a medical photographer
at the VA Hospital in Shreve-
port.
The Tarjick family moved to
Carthage in 1976 and Bro. Tar-
jick was the former pastor at
Northside Baptist Church for
three years; Liberty Chapel
Church for two years; and he
was a 32nd Degree Mason. With
the birth of each of his children,
grandchildren and great-grand-
children, he gave each child a
Bible at their birth with his fa-
vorite John 8:32 inscribed along
with their name. He loved fish-
ing, and working in his garden
and yard brought him great joy.
Everyone who knew and loved
him will miss him deeply.
Survivors include his wife,
Reba Tarjick, of Carthage; sons
and daughters-in-law, Yogi and
Sherri Tarjick, and Bryan and
Karen Tarjick, all of Carthage,
and Todd and Melanie Tarjick,
of Coppell; daughter and son-in-
law, Lori and Carl Barawell, of
Carthage; and special cousin and
her spouse, Dorothy and Al
Cretella, of Pierra, Ark.
Also surviving Tarjick are his
grandchildren. Crystal Tarjick,
Tyler Tarjick, Rachel Tarjick,
Scarlett Tarjick, Grant Tarjick,
Jordann Tarjick, Tucker Tarjick,
Bonnie Bardwell, Blake Bard-
well, Bo Bardwell and Baylbr
Bardwell; great-grandchild,
Madison Leigh Tarjick; and
several nieces and nephews.
