Most Texas gardeners
have relatively small gar-
dens and find it difficult to
spread small amounts of
fertilizer over areas of only
a few hundred square feet.
The soil test recommenda-
tion for garden fertilizer is
often about W to 2 pounds
per 100 square feet.

apply the correct amount of
fertilizer, using a combina-
tion measure/spreader you
can make from a coffee
can.

1-pound coffee can on a
kitchen scale and zero the
scales. Pour fertilizer into

Then pour more fertilizer
into the can until the scale
registers 1 pound, and mark
this level on the inside and
outside of the can. Label
each level with the weight

3. Empty the can and
punch 12 to IS holes in the
bottom with a 10-penny
nail. This will allow the
granules to flow slowly and
evenly out of the can as it is
gently shaken. Put the plas-

from flowing out until you
are ready to use it.
