Obituary
Hugo Angel Rhodes, "changed the world," when he was born in Chicago,
Illinois on October 3, 1925, to Franklin Benjamin and Venus Vernetta
(Jefferson) Rhodes. He was educated in the public school system of Chicago,
completing elementary, middle and high school levels. Hugo continued his
education, and at the young age of 49 years, graduated from St. Phillips's
College with an Associate of Arts Degree on May 18, 1975 and from
Southwest Texas State University with a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science
Degree on December 18, 1976.
On February 10, 1948, Hugo was united in holy matrimony in Chicago to Joan
(Jo as he dubbed his spouse, who proceeded him in death) Larvelle Dorsey.
They were married for 57 years. To this union was born five children, Angela
Bernadette (John) Hogan, Susan Eloise (Robert) Lemons, Nancy Lolita
(Robert) Portis, Catherine Sharee (Brian) Moss and son, Franklin Lavell
(Tonya) Rhodes.
Hugo's life entailed much activity and accomplishments. He served in the U.S.
Army and the U.S. Air Force for a total of 22 years. He served in World War II,
Korea and Vietnam. His military assignments also took him to Japan twice,
Thailand, Arizona, New York, and of course San Antonio, Texas, where he
and his lovely wife settled in 1958. After retiring from the military in 1969,
Hugo worked for the U.S. Postal Service for twelve years, ten years as a
teacher for the San Antonio Independent School District, and four years for the
Bexar County Appraisal District Review Board. He was a member of the 3rd
and 4th degree of the Knights of Peter Claver and a life member of Omega Psi
Phi Fraternity, Inc. He was in a numerous amount of civic organizations, such
as the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Eastside Optimist Club, American Legion,
Veterans of Foreign War, and Disabled Veterans. Hugo served as Director of
St. Joseph Catholic Church Downtown Altar Servers, as well as Lector and
Eucharistic Minister for many years. Among his treasured accomplishments
was Co-Founder of the Joan and Hugo Rhodes Scholarship Foundation,
founded in the year 1999 to provide monetary assistance for graduating high
school seniors in making their college dreams come true. "The Mission
Continues, The Legacy Begins."
Hugo leaves to celebrate his life, his five children, nineteen grandchildren and
seven great grandchildren. Added to this his dear siblings Latonia, Dolores,
Adriana, Ana, Najamora, Cecelia, Carmen, Navarro and Franklin. Also a
host of nieces, nephews and friends.
