WHARTON Oil MILL HAS OVER
$100,000 WORTH OF PEANUTS
Jesse Martin Successfully Cures 4,000
Bushels—A. C. King Also
Curing Them.
Peoples Oil and Cotton Company Will
Begin Work on Peanuts
Soon.
As an instance of Uncle Sam’s effi-
ciency insofar as first-class mail Is
concerned, including postal cards, the
record shows that only one piece out
of every 22,000 is lost. And this aver-
age is sustained in the face of all kinds
of writing and all classes of mail.
Pretty efficient system is it not?—
Pay City Tribune.
ctill you can write letter after let-
ter to some people, with your return
address on each one and they'll per-
sist in telling you “I never got your
letter.” This is especially true if yon
are. trying to collect a little
from them —Luling Signal.
To preserve sweet potatoes indef-
initely ahd to prevent the ravages of
the borer and the boll weevil or
whatever it is that attacks them when
banked without treatment, Jesse Mar-
tin and R. C. King have each gone
into the kiln drying business of cur-
ing them. Mr. Martin has just fin-
ished treated a lot of 4,000 bushels,
and says that he can now keep them
until he wishes to turn them loose,
or until such time as the market is
not glutted and prices are better than
at present. Mr. King also has quite
a lot in process of being cured.
It is claimed that the potatoes are
increased from 25 per cent to 40 per
cent in value when so treated, in that
better prices are offered for the kiln-
cured tubers than for those that are
not. They can be shipped without
fear of spoilage and for greater dis-
tances than otherwise, with the re-
sult that the market area is widened.
This being true, all the potatoes
: grown should be treated, effecting a
tremendous-' saving to Texas growers.
—Wharton Spectator.
The reporter visited the Peoples Oil
and Cotton Company plant this wdek
and thought.he saw all the peanuts in
the world. They have stored some-
thing like a hundred cars of peanuts,
on which the mill will start to work
as soon as the cotton seed run is
finished. It is the intention of the
management to make oil and stock
feed of the nuts, and to do what it
can to bring to the general public the
knowledge of the value of this feed
for stock and hogs.
Recent tests by various feeding sta- 6
tions show that the meal or cake, after
the oil is taken out is a superior feed
for hogs to corn, and that while the
packing plants will not pay the aver-
age price for hogs fed on the raw'
peanut with the oil in it, owing to
the fact that the meat of such ani-
mals js flabby, they will pay a pre-
mium for those fed the cake, as the
meat is firm, and has an exceptional
flavor.
Peanut feed is also valuable stock
feed and with other better known
feeds selling at .such high prices,
there is every indication at present
that there will be a widespread de-
mand for it once the mill begins to
make it.
1 Most of this §100,000 goes to outside
points, because the nuts were not
raised in this county. The mill is
buying all the nuts offered for sale
here, and is glad to get them, but
the quantity produced here is limited
and the management had to reach out
to get a supply to keep the mill going
for some time. Another year the
Spectator hopes to see the bulk of the
money put out by the oil mill for this
crop paid to Wharton County farm-
ers.—Wharton Spectator.

to build up a business, there must be a common interest.
