figs spread to the Mediterranean

the New World when Spanish

Cuba in 1520.
Figs became so plentiful that
calling someone a “fig” meant he
was a valueless, dull witted fool.

Moslems also revere these

The decline and fall of figs
Figs are comparable to an
aging beauty queen, long past her
. prime, being replaced by younger
beauties. The once popular fig
has been replaced by other fruits.
They have a glorious histoiy in
many cultures.
Figs are the first fruit
mentioned in the Christian Bible.
Genesis chapter 3, verse 7 reports
that Adam and Eve “sewed fig
leaves together and ' made
themselves aprons. “They were
so valuable that Abigail brought
figs as a peace offering to King
David, in I Samuel, chapter 25,
verse 18. The offering was
successful. Her husband, Nabal,
had cheated and insulated David
but he refused to take revenge on
her husband. Still later, in II
Kings, chapter 20, verse 7, the
Bible reports that figs were used - . .
as medicine to cure Hezekiah, J°_ien?Ja“^ dSoPp,ng “?
“And Isaiah said, Take a lump of
figs. And they took and laid it on
the boils, and he recovered.”
Figs also are part of Greek
mythology. Zeus was chasing the
Goddess, Ge and her son Skeus
in the War of the Titans. To
protect er son, Ge turned him into
a fig tree. The Greek statesman
Solon (638-558 BC) prized them
so highly that he decreed that
none would be exported.
The Roman were equally fond
of figs. Fresh ones were available toothpick. Chill and serve,
from July to October, but they
