peach harvest in Texas is the ear-
liest in the nation, and consumers
are eager to buy fresh spring
peaches from Texas.
There are about 10 to 12 dif-
ferent varieties of peaches grown
in Texas. Some of the varieties to
be harvested will be the June Gold
variety, followed by the Harvester
and then the Redskin variety.

King peach varieties. However,
the variety of peach grown de-
pends on each area and the num-
ber of chilling hours required, Stein
said. Peaches in the Texas Hill
Country region are currently about
the size of a quarter, but should
reach the size of a tennis ball, two-
and-a-half inches and larger, by
the time the harvest gains momen-
tum in mid-to-late May.
Texas produces about 15 mil-
lion to 30 million pounds of
peaches a year, or about 1 per-
cent of the peaches produced in
the nation. California is the leader
