Slow weight-loss is best

I have been following a knr-
carbohydrate diet to try to
lose about two pounds 1
tissue a day, a half pound of
fat and a half pound of mus-
cle or similar protein tissue.
I don’t like your diet. You
need to develop a balanced
low-calorie diet Then you
can follow it thereafter and
not regain the weight As it
is now, you will probably
gain your fat back when you
return to a more balanced
eating plan. And I would like
to see more of your fat loss
related to an increase in
exercise that becomes a per-
manent part df your life-
style.
As explained in The
Health Letter 20-10, Doing
Something About Body Fat,
■ which I am sending you, the
road to success is baaed on
using more calories than you
consume. Others who want

♦ DEAR DR. BLAKER -
Our 22-year-old daughter
has been in therapy twice a
week for one year at a cost
of 875 per session.
She has been helped a lot,
but we are runqjng out of
money and wonder what we
should do. Should we speak
to her psychiatrist and ask
for a reduction in fee or
would that-make him think
we are ungrateful?
DEAR READER - It
would be best if your daugh-
ter could talk with him
about this financial drain on
the family. If she refuses,
then don't hesitate to pick up
the telephone and ask
whether he would prefer to
talk, then or in person about*
this problem
He might come up with
ideas other than reducing
the fee. For example, he
might offer to see her for
shorter sessions or in some
way convince her to begin
working to contribute to her
own therapy costs.
If he does react in a nega-
tive way, you should consid-
er his behavior unethical.
DEAR DR. BLAKER - I
■ am 38 years old and just
about ready to get married
for the first time. Of course,
I am very happy and feel
lucky that someone wants
me.
My only problem is that
all my life I have been a nib-
bler at night. I go to sleep
about 11 and then wake up
two hours later. I get up and
go to the refrigerator and
eat some fruit or nutritious
food.
It’s like a compulsion with
me and I am terribly afraid

to fantasize about a more in-

week
The extent of my exercise
is housework, cutting grass
I take about 25 to 30
of carbohydrates
According to some diet
books, some people lose 20
pounds or more the first
month. Is this possible?
I also went to the extent of
purchasing an ear stimula-
tor which I think is an
expensive fraud. In the past
two months I have lost 16
pounds. 4 started at 185 and
am now 169, but I am bald-

green lettuce salad or cole-
slaw and lots of fish. I also
take multi-vitamins and
mineral tablets. Am I going
about this the wrong way?
Or are the hormone pills
preventing me from losing
more weight?
Would you please tell me
if this is all I can expect? My
goal is 30 pounds, which
seems like a mountain.
