BALTIMORE . (.AP).- Before Jabal
national anthem at the first game of the
went right to the source.
As part of Ns preparation for the pre-game rendition of
“The Star-Spangled Banner,” Denver visited Fort McHenry,
where Francis Scott Key wrote the anthem’s lyrics while a
prisoner of the British in the Baltimore harbor in 1814.
“It was a moving experience,” said the 39-year-old Denver
whose recording of “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” has
captivated Baltimore fans for years. The song is a regular
fixture at Orioles’ home games during the seventh-inning
stretch.
The Orioles tried to eliminate the recording on the opening
day of 1883, but the move was booed vociferously and a
subsequent poll showed conclusively that the fans wanted^
Denver’s Mt song.
Denver was invited to visit Memorial Stadium after that
incident, and he told officials be would come to Baltimore if
the Orioles made it into the World Series.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Hamilton Jordan,
who was White House chief of staff under President Jimmy
Carter, says those four years on the political scene were
enough - and he’s thinking about switching to a white smock
and a stethoscope.
Jordan, 38, who after leaving the WN|e House wrote a book
about the Carter presidency, told students during a talk at
Shepherd College on Tuesday that he has been toying with the
idea of applying to medical school.
No matter what he does, he said, his days in politics are
over. i

LONDON (AP)-Prince Charles, known for his love of the
great outdoors, is tailing hia subjects: “God Save tbs Land!”
That’s the essence of the prince’s message in the current
issue of Natural World magazine. The heir to the British
throne wrote an article suggesting it’s up to farmers, lan-
downers and others to save land from “random Industrial
development, intensification in farming methods and
* population pressure.”
All have combined to reduce the quality of the, en-
vironment, he says.
“As a result, many forms of wildlife have suffered or even *
become extinct,” says the 34-year-old eldest son of Queen i
The prince, a patron of the Royal Society of Nature Con-
servation, which publishes the magazine, has worked to
make his 180,000 acres of estates in the Duchy of Cornwall a
model of conservation-conscious farming. Apparently, royal
charm and persuasion works well for him.---
“I find that when I can meet people ... farmers, con-
servationists, representatives of statutory authorities and
the like, it is possible to achieve a reasonable degree of .
agreement,” he wrote. %-
