perior approach is to force the oppo-
nents to lead your suits for you. De-
clarer should win the opening lead
with the ace of spades, play a heart to
the ace and trump a heart. A spade is
new led to the king and another heart
trumped. Both the dummy and declar-
er’s hand are now exhausted of hearts.
The defenders have no more trumps
left, and it is easy now for South to just
play a low club from his hand. If East
wins and plays a diamond, declarer
puts m the rune That will end pl-v
West. If East wins and plays another
club, South plays the jack and West is
end played once again.

South's luck seemed to have run out.
He won the opening lead in dummy
and played a club to his jack, but it lost
to West's queen. He later played a club
to his king, which lost to West’s ace.
Then he attacked the diarpond suit. A
diamond to the nine lost to the 10, and
when he next played a diamond to the
queen — I’m sure you've got it figured
out by now — that card lost to the
king. Every card was wrong and de-
clarer lost four tricks to go set in what
was, in fact, a contract that could be
made with absolute certainty.
It’s fine to take finesses when
there’s nothing better to do, but a su-
That extra energy Popeye gets
from spinach is no joke. Dieticians
say that spinach is exceptionally high
in nutritional value. Starting in the
1920s, spinach received much publici-
ty for its wealth of calcium and iron,
along with vitamins A and C.
t I used to think when babies were born their hands were curved to
accommodate a credit card. Having researched this/or many years, I
have now come to the conclusion that the hand is formed this way to hold
a beverage can.
Never have I known a civilization roaming around with a liquid no
farther than six inches away from their lips. Americans drink
everywhere...at work, at play, in cars, in hot tubs, in airplanes, in sports
arenas, in lines, at weddings and funerals.
If what is in the can doesn’t kill us, the pressure to determine what
drink to choose will.
At first, it wasn’t bad. We had a choice of our drink in a bottle or a can.
Then we had to decide if we wanted to twist off the bottle cap or take it
off with an opener. Or we could use an opener on the can or buy one with
a flip top. I could handle that.
Then I could either have a drink with sugar or withou sugar wih a
warning tha the substitute for sugar would cause cancer. That decision
was a toughie. Then they found a sugar substitute to take the place of a
sugar substitute.
They took out sodium and caffeine, but they added lemon and lime
which involved another decision. Was it worth the calories to get it
down?
Some took out the carbonation and substituted spring-fed water (what •
isn’t?) Others changed colors and some went to crystals where you just
added water.
Eventually they took the alcohol out of alcoholic beverages, followed
closely by the extraction of calories. A new word was added to my
beverage vocabulary: coolers.
Eventually we were faced with figuring out what was new, classic,
dietary and the old family recipe.
The aisles in the supermarkets continue to grow day by day.
Sometimes I spend 30 or 40 minutes pacing in front of them trying to
figure out the tastes and needs of everyone in the family.
The other day I had to figure out if I wanted wine in a six-pack or an
elegant bottle in an imported basket for the table. Did I want a bottle
with alcohol or one that people could drink at lunch without some wimp
reporting you to the boss? Did I want a screw-on top or one with a cork?
Domestic or imported? Red or white? Aged or made-white-you-wait?
I don’t know how to tell manufacturers of beverages in a kind way, so
I’ll just spit it out. I have a family. I have to get on with my life. I have
commitments to keep and an appointment with destiny. I don’t have
time to check in every week to see what is “improved” or
“revolutionary.”
As I told the man at the supermarket, “All I want is a nice, low-calorie
drink that is refreshing, satisfying, has no salt, no caffeine and is
something I can drink on the job.’’ £ *
He handed me a bottle of water and said, “Foreign or domestic?
Plastic bottle or glass? Liter or six-pack? With our without gas?”
It’s enough to drive you to dehydration.

Public Notice
Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, in
accordance with an order of the Public Utility
Commission of Texas, hereby gives notice
that on August 20,1985, the Company filed
tariffs which propose revisions to the Joint
User Tariffs and implementation of Shared
Tenant Services Tariffs.
If the tariffs are approved by the Public Util-
ity Commission, the Company will grand-
father existing customers to the Joint User
Tariffs and totally withdraw the Joint User Tar-
iffs one year after the date of approval of the
proposed tariff revisions, with one exception.
Even after the one year period, existing sin-
gle-line customers subscribing to Joint User
Tariffs may continue their service under cer-
tain conditions.
Also, if the tariffs are approved, the provi-
sion of shared tenant services will require
partitioned switching equipment.
No new rates are being proposed in the
aforementioned tariffs. As a result of the parti-
tioning of switching equipment, some exist-
ing customers may require additional PBX
trunks. If so, the Company's revenues may
increase. The Company is unable, at this
time, to estimate the additional revenues, if
any, which would result therefrom.
The Commission received these tariffs as
Docket 6450 and a prehearing conference
will be held at 10:00 AM., Monday, Sep-
tember 23,1985, at the Commission’s offices
at 7800 Shoal Creek Boulevard, in Austin,
