—1 ■ Mental Prestone —-
The severe weather we have
had over the past weeks has been K
■perfect for people watching. Noth-
ing brings out the best or worst in
, people like anow and ice. For the ■
most part, local residents seemed to M
take the weather in stride but, there
are always a few for whom the cold
weather seems to clog up the old
brain. ----L------— W
Example number one is the
driver who.is intent upon going up a certain, ice covered,
hill. This driver simply refuses to admit defeat and
attempts., to make it up the hill time and again. Having
made it part way up the hili, he slides to the bottom and
begins again. , . .
Then we have example number two. This is the driver
who parks against the curb on an incline and cannot back
away from the curb. This is bad enough, but I have seen
several people do this same thing as many as three times in
one day! -

recall that Jonah was directed to gp to preach in the wicked

This may have meant children, but, at any -ralr7
130.000 folks that don't know right frmq left are a bunch!
Oddly enough, our observation is that even today
there are more people than one would think who are in the

make certain which is her left hand when asked to move

This is not a new problem, early U.S. armies were *
confronted with the same dilemma when confronted by
illiterate farmers as volunteers. They solved it by tyipg a
piece of hay to the left foot and a bit of straw to the right,
the origin of the "hay foot, straw foot" marching command.
Those farm boys might not have known anything else, but
they knew hay from straw!
The armed forces have struggled with the situation
ever since. Navy reasoning is not easy to understand, as

"looard." You wonder why ships collide?
The word “poah." incidentally, meaning classy,
originated with these directions. In the days when there
was much travel between England and India, heat from the
late afternoon sun was an uncomfortable factor, so
everyone, wanted a room on the side of the ship away from nounc^j by the First Ng

In flight operations, the Air Force chose to deal with.,
the situation by a degree system, minus being left *nd plus
indicating right. But bombardiers give aetual readings as -
the drift was occurring and navigators read it as a
correction to the pilot, exactly opposite. We recall with
shivers one frigid night when a flight was prolonged two
e hours by poor communication between the two. resulting
in a horrendous 28 degree error.
There are some unfortunate people who suffer from a
form of dyslexia, which reverses their jnotoc muscle and county officials called a
response,
reason: tell one to turn left and a right turn results!

? There are endless.examples of the importance of these
two directions tn our life. The political term “right" and
“left" for conservative* and liberals originated in the
English Parliament, where,.the party loyal to the throne
sits to the right of the Speaker and ths “loyal opposition"
on the left of the aisle.
t So. knowing the difference in the two is important.
Right? Or is it.left?
