Got to watch our alma mater
McNeese play its final home
game of the regular season,
winning 17-10 against longtime
nemesis Northwestern La.
Saturday night at Cowboy
Stadium in Lake Charles.
The Pokes’ defense was
awesome, limiting the visiting
Demons to zero total yards
rushing, including a minus 32 in
the second half. The Cowboys
also sacked quarterback Craig
Nall five times. Offensively,
McNeese was at its best when
running the ball. Quarterback
Slade Nagle hit on 14 of 26
passes for 148 yards but was
intercepted twice in the end
zone. If the Cowboys can win
their final two games against
Nicholls State Saturday and
Jacksonville State Nov. 24, they
will win the Southland Football
League and get an automatic
berth in the NCAA Division l-AA
playoffs.
The Dallas Cowboys weren't
as fortunate Sunday at Atlanta
as they dominated the first half
action by gaining more than 200
yards rushing until it came
down to crunch time and new
quarterback Ryan Leaf had to
think and throw the football
accurately in the final two min-
utes in an effort to tie the game
After having a record four of Orange County teams make
the playoffs a year ago, we’re back down to one this year, but
that one is not West Orange-Stark as it has been in years past.
The Bridge City Cardinals will be the only representatives
in the post season this year, and they get to play a team that
they are already familiar with, the
Liberty Panthers. The 3A Division I
bi-district matchup will be at 7:30
p.m. Friday inside Lamar’s Cardinal
Stadium. Pregame on KOGT will
begin at T. 15.
BC beat Liberty 30-16 in Week
One to avenge a Zl-1 loss to the
Panthers a year ago. In that game,
Liberty actually had an 8-7 halftime
lead before the Cards used their
ground game to win by two touch-
Gary Stelly downs.
Matt Peebles rushed for 117 yards on 15 carries and scored
on a 7-yard run as well as a 47-yard interception return from
his safety position. BC didn’t dominate the game statistically
like they have in most of their games this season but remem-
ber it was the opening week where a lot of mistakes are made
and kinks are worked out.
Throughout the season, Liberty throws the ball just a bit
more than the Cardinals, which means not much. They come -
into the game with a 4-5 record as Lincoln cancelled their
game against the Panthers in the Zero Week because of the
weather. They also had their homecoming game against
Coldspring called in the fourth quarter because of rain.
Coldspring was given the win leading 6-3.
Perennially, they’ve been known as a good offensive team
with a less than average defense. Guys like quarterback
Donald Douglas and running back Reggie White come to
mind. But this season their defense has been better giving up
17 points per game or 22 points per game in their five losses.
Offensively, they’re led by Jeremy Roberts who had 95
yards rushing against BC. He also rushed for 158 in a game
against Huffman. He’s played both running back and quarter-
back for the Panthers.
The only common opponent between the two playoff teams
is Kelly. But it’s difficult to gauge because when Liberty beat
the Bulldogs 3-0 in Week Three, it was during that gully
washer where many games were cancelled. BC had defeated
Kelly the week before 36-0.
This will be the 22nd meeting between BC and Liberty with
the red and white leading the series 13-8 which dates back to
I960. The Cards had lost three straight to the Panthers before
winning this season.
As for playing teams twice in a season, the Mustangs are
the only local team to have experience in that category. They
have beat Jasper twice in three different seasons while losing
to them in the 1994 playoffs after beating them in the regular
season. The same thing happened to them in 1998 against
Silsbee. In 1986, they lost to Jasper in the regular season and
beat them in the playoffs en route to the state championship.
With a BC victory on Friday, they will play the winner
between the (7-3) Sweeny Bulldogs and (9-1) Splendora
Wildcats, who were trying for the schools first 10-0 season
before losing to Tarkington on Friday 22-20 in the Battle of
the Bell. They will play Saturday night at Tully Stadium. A
game against Splendora would create somewhat of a home-
coming for the Briggs family. Richard coaches in BC, and his
brother Reese is an assistant with the Wildcats.

possession, WO-S reeled off a
55-yard scoring march in seven
plays with wide receiver
JaMarqus O’Neal capping the
drive with a 15-yard reverse,
padding the lead to 28-0.
