The Catholic Daughters of Amer-
ica gave one of their delightful
dances at the Knights of Columbus
hall, Wednesday night, April 3, from
9 to 12.
Steve Gardner and his Hokum
Kings furnished their usual brand of
hot music for dance lovers. It be-
ing the first dance after Lent a large
number of young people attended,
including many St. Edward’s stu-
dents.
With L. Guerra, Holguin, and Ar-
guelles leading at the bat, the St.
Edward’s university Spanish club
baseball team emerged victorious
with the top-heavy score of 20 to 7,
over the Jovenes Mexicanos, of San
Antonio, in their game in that city
on tne afternoon of Easter Sunday.
The game, which was played at
Lyons field in Brackenridge park,
was entirely one sided. The Span-

Charles Brogan, co-captain of the
1929 track team, has been forced to
retire from athletics on account of
repeated injuries to his left knee.
Brogan’s injury has been one of
long standing, but not until recently
has it become so serious. He in-
jured it several times during the
past two months and now, after hav-
ing it x-rayed, his doctors have ad-
vised him that if he does not retire
from athletics the injury will be-
come a permanent one.
Brogan is a senior in the Univer-
sity this year and a candidate for
the A. Bf. degree. He is co-captain
of the track team and number two
man in tennis. He competes in two
events in track, high jump and the
pole vault.
Brogan lettered in both track and
tennis last year.
The large number of track candi-
dates and their early showing points
to an encouraging year for the 1929
Varsity track team.
Last year witnessed a revival of
track activities at St. Edward’s after
a lapse of several years. The track-
sters of last year went beyond ex-
pectations and took third place in the
Texas conference track meet held in
Abilene. This year’s cinder artists _
are expected to have even greater | ish clubmen battered the opposing
success due to the large number of
likely candidates and with the coach-
ing of Jim Sheffield, Saint track
mentor, who has enjoyed marked
success in the moulding of champ-
ionship track teams.
Squad Mostly New
The team will be composed mostly
of raw material this year as only
two track lettermen have returned
from the 19 28 aggregation. The
two lettermen are captain Hannan
and Brogan. Hannan, who will lead
the Saints this year, is rated as one
of the fastest dash men in the con-
ference, and should better his past
performances this season. Brogan,
Saint high jumper of no mean abil-
ity, may be unable to perform for
the Saints this year because of a
severe injury he received to his knee
during the early part of the year.
Coach Sheffield has an array of
strong quarter-milers from which he
hopes to build the fastest mile re-
lay team in the circuit. He has
Turner, Finn, and Moreau, quarter-
milers from last year’s team, as well
as Captain Hannan who. is also try-
ing out for the relay quartet. From
the raw material the Coach has three
more good 440-yard men in Vance,
Hajovsky, and Farr, In Vance and
Farr the Saint track team has a
pair of hurdlers who will stack up
favorably with any in the conference.
Parma and Turner, hurdlers from
last year, are working daily on the
low hurdles and with their past ex-
perience should have little difficulty
in giving the Saints some points in
every meet.
Hen-on is Sole Vaulter
McAtee and Murphy, new men,
have been working on the mile event
and with a little seasoning should de-
velop into topnotch milers, as should
Rothrock, another newcomer. P.
Quirk, a half-miler with one year of
college experience, has been showing
up well in early season trials. Her-
ron, a freshman pole vaulter, is the
Saints’ only entry in this event since
Brogan has been on the injured list.
Herron and Munoz have been concen-
trating on the long distance runs
and should prove to be point-getters
for the Saints. W. Quirk has been
showing the most promise among the
Saint weight men although Herten-
berger has also been showing good
form. Throwing the discus will pro-
bably be done by McCabe, Vogt, and
Frisch.
The track schedule at present is
as follows: Southwestern univer-
sity in Georgetown, April 8; Texas,
Southwest Texas State Teachers,
and Southwestern in Austin, April
20; Schreiner and Southwest Texas
State Teachers in San ^Marcos on
April 27; Southwestern and South-
west Texas State Teacher's in San
Marcos on May 3; Texas conference
meet in May. A number of other
meets are still tentative.

The lineup for the « San Antonio
team is not available, but that of
the St. Edward’s Spanish club was
as follows: Hinojosa, c; B’arrera, p;
Guerra, cf; A. Guerra, 2b; Ochoa,
pitchers unmercifully. L. Guerra
copped the batting honors, collecting
four hits, one of thfem a three-bag-
ger, out of four trips to the plate.
Holguin came second with three hits
out of four attempts, and Arguelles
followed with a home run over the
left fielder’s head.
It is very probable that the con-
quered Jovenes Mexicanos will come
Edward’s to play a return
in the near future, Guerra
