Rabbi Segal Writes to President Reagan
President Ronald Reagan July 8, 1982
The White House
Washington, D. C. 20500
Dear Mr. President,
This week, William Safire of The New York Times made
a suggestion in regard to the Palestinian problem that I
believe merits serious consideration. He said that King Fahd
of Saudi Arabia had offered Ayatollah Khomeini $25 billion
not to invade Iraq. Safire therefore suggested that King Fahd
merely offer $5 billion to build a magnificent metropolis
on the East Bank of Jordan for the Palestinians. He even
suggested that it be called “Fahd City.”
I personally feel that he did not make this suggestion with
“tongue in cheek” but rather presented it as a concrete pro-
posal for a just solution to the Palestinian problem. In this
manner many would be aided. The Jordanian economy would
be uplifted and Palestinian energies would be channeled in a
constructive direction rather than in a destructive direction.
Palestinians would also not be able to say that they are being
directed away from Palestine because both the West Bank
and East Bank were originally Palestine in 1917 when Great
Britain gave both of those parts to the Jews as a Jewish
national homeland. It was only several years later that
Britain reneged on its promise, took the East Bank away
from the Jews, and established Transjordan.
After World War II 40,000,000 refugees were resettled in
different countries. West Germany absorbed almost 10
million refugees after World War II, Austria received almost
200,000 after the Hungarian rebellion of 1956, Italy accepted
almost 600,000 from Yugoslavia and Africa, France gave
permanent asylum to more than 1-1/4 million who were dis-
placed by the emergence of new states in North Africa and
Indochina, tiny Holland accepted almost 1/4 million refugees
from Indochina, Turkey resettled 150,000 Turks who had
been expelled by the Communists in Bulgaria, Pakistan and
India exchanged 15 million residents, Finland absorbed
400,000 Karelians, and Israel, the United States and Canada
absorbed 800,000 Jews who had been expelled by Arab
nations. In view of this, why can’t the Arabs resettle their
own Arabs in a metropolis on the East Bank rather than
allow them to still languish in poverty in refugee camps?
The opulent Arab nations are the only ones in this world who
have ignored the plight of their own brothers and sisters.
They are the only ones who have demanded repatriation in
Israel — a dream of fantasy.
I truly hope that William Satire’s suggestion will receive
serious consideration.
Members of the synagogue interested in having a baby-
sitting service for the High Holy Days services are asked
to call the synagogue office (666-1881) for information con-
cerning the committee being formed.
Sincerely,
FAMILY ALBUM
