LAUFMAN GIFTS
ENRICH BETH YESHURUN STUDIES
At Sabbath evening services, January 6, 1978, Sol and
Helen Laufman celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
It was a service in which the entire family participated, and in
remembrance of that happy occasion, the Laufmans wanted to
make a major donation to Beth Yeshurun to support an im-
portant synagogue activity.
It has taken many months of Beth Yeshurun’s leaders to
decide on the gift that would mean the most to the congregation.
And happily, they decided the major beneficiaries should be
the children of our Religious Schools, the future leaders of our
synagogue and the Jewish community.
The gift? A complete TV recording facility for use by all the
Beth Yeshurun Religious Schools, plus 60 prayer books for our
Junior Congregation. Plus, as an extra bonus to adult Jewish
education, a slide projector with a zoom lens for the Akiba
Institute.
The TV facility offers all kinds of educational possibilities. It
enables the TV recording of student classroom activities, of
teachers in action, and of special student events such as festival
celebrations. It also can record regular TV programs such as
“Face The Nation,” as well as programs of special Jewish in-
terest for rebroadcast in the classrooms.
The older grades benefit particularly, and recently, the
eighth-graders put on an original TV newscast, which was
written up in “World Over,” a national Jewish student
publication.
“The Beth Yeshurun Religious Schools are deeply apprecia-
tive of the Laufmans’ exceptional gifts,” says Dr. Avi Raphaeli,
principal of the Hebrew School. “These gifts are especially
appreciated because they are not only symbolic of the good
will of the donors, but they are also extremely functional.
Almost every day, the TV recording facility serves an important
role that benefits our students, and every Sabbath, the prayer
books are put to use by our Junior Congregation.”
Harold Falk, chairman of the Adult Education Committee,
adds: “The Akiba Institute constantly strives to do for adult
Jewish education what our Religious Schools do for our children.
Every aid we receive, such as the fine slide projector from the
Laufmans, make the job that much easier.”
And as a special footnote, Rabbi Segal says: “Anything that
contributes to Jewish education is a blessing. The tools that
make for greater knowledge today can make for a stronger
Judaism tomorrow. So, all of us at Beth Yeshurun thank Sol
and Helen Laufman for their 50th anniversary gifts and wish
them many more years of health and happiness together.”
