Buford Folmar with the Soil
Conservation Service, Winn*
boro spoke and slides were
shown of the need for
refurenratioc with pine trees in
thi* area at the meeting of the
Mt Venron Rotary Club on
Friday He was the guest of
Hermon Connelly program
chairman for the day
Folmar related that most of
those present could remember
when most of Wood and
Franklin Counties were cover
ed with pine trees Most of them
have disappeared now he
pointed out, for pasture or other
uses and there are not enough
trees being grown to supply the
need for lumber paper and
wood products
It takes 60-65 years he
pointed out. for a pine tree to
grow to maturity but income
from the planting of pine
seedlings can begin in 19 year*
and will continue for years and
years if the trees are cut
selectively
Many areas are cut off which
are not suited for pasture and
then erosion begins eating
away the soil and soil is washed
into the streams and lakes
He pointed out that pine trees
w ill control erosion and provide
income for the future
Many of the slides were of a
selective wood cutting oper
ation which was completely
mechanized The cutter which
snips the trees off at the ground
surface, can cut and pile four
trees a minute and then feed
them into the portable wood
chipper which will grind tree*
up to 32 inches in diameter The
chipper then blows the chip*
into a covered van truck for
transportation to a paper mil)
or wood products plant This
type of operation utilizes the
entire tree from the butt
through the very top. pine
needles cones and all The
operation leaves no waste for a
fire hazard or breeding place
tor insect*
Folmar closed his talk
quoting a few lines from the
poem "I'll Never Hear a Poem
As Lovely As A Tree
Visiting Rotarians were Bob
^hae Broach secretary Mrs
Vada Shumate, vice-president.
