Wine lovers of the world must surely also love the
British government's Medical Research Council. After an
extended study of 18 Western countries analyzing statistics
on causes of death, dietary factors, and other variables, the
Council has found what they call a "very strong relationship"
between moderate wine consumption and a low death rate
from heart disease. Involved in the study were such factors
as cigarette smoking, fat intake, and availability of medical
care. In fact, the Council Qatly stated that the more wine
drunk the fewer heart attacks, leading them to conclude the
amount of wine drunk is an even more potent factor in heart
attacks than polyunsaturate fats. And what, pray tell, is
“moderate”? Well, the Italians, with the lowest heart disease
death rate, go through about 25 gallons of wine per person a
year. Ain’t that about two pints a week, folks?

The afterglow of the recent visit by the Rotary
exchange team from Iceland lingers on, a$ wp pondered on
the use of names. The far north country is f ather a new cardiovascular fitness,
they have definite ideas about their ideal societies. Such
Icelanders are determined that each baby will begin life as 1
an individual with no past but only a future. To accomplish control body weight, and
name of the father with a suffix to indicate male or female.
That is , some of the visitors wer Kjartan Rafnsson, meaning
son of Rafn; John Hafsteinn Eriksson, son of Erik; and son
on. If these had been female, the word “Dottir,” meaning
daughter, of course, would havq been taken; Rafnsdottir,
Halfdarnarsdottir, and such. To make things more interest-
ing, the phone books are then indexed by first names! Who
was it that asked what's in a name?

Terms like "rat fink” and “squealer” have a reputation as
opprobrious and disgraceful. But, somehow, when it involves
bur pocketbook we hardly see it that way. That is, when one
throws trash and litter all over the highways, it is partly our
tax money that pays someone to pick it up. Damaging public
facilities and parks costs us, right out of our bank account.
And maybe income tax cheaters are worst. We can’t get
away from the thought that for every dollar these cheats
don’t pay, someone else must. Therefore, we urge forgetting
traditions and reporting any vandalism immediately to the
authorities. And, for those with information on tax dodgers,
there is a handy toll free number just ior this purpose:
1 800 424 5454. It’s not a matter of tattle-taling, it’s common
sense as a taxpayer!
