USDA Loans
Continue
Secretary of Agriculture
John R Block announced
March 19 that the U.S.
Department of Agriculture's
housing assistance pro-
grams will continue to be
available in rural areas of
10,000 to 20.000 people
This authority was due to
expire March 31.
Normally, the Farmers
Home Administration, which
administers USDA's housing
assistance programs, is
limited to serving areas of
up to 10,000 people. An ex-
ception is made when the
Secretaries of Agriculture
and Housing and Urban
Development agree that
there is a serious shortage of
mortgage credit in the
higher populated areas.
The assistance is then
available in those designated
rural areas as long as they
are not located in a Standard
Metropolitan Statistical
Area.

Smith Named
Cystic Fibrosis
Chairperson
Mrs Terry Smith has been
named Chairperson of the
Spring Special Event in Mt.
Vernon for Cystic Fibrosis
The announcement was
made by the North-East
Texas Chapter of the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation
Cystric fibrosis is an in-
herited and degenerative
disease that attacks the
lungs and the digestive
system by producing a thick
glue-like mucus that impairs
normal breathing and diges-
tion An average of five
children are bom with cystic
fibrosis every day.
There is still no cure for
CF, but research continues
in the effort to find one In
the meantime, this research
serves to improve medical
treatment that prolongs and
enhances the quality of the
lives of cystic fibrosis pa-
tients
Major improvements have
been made Fifteen years
ago, it was rare for a child to
live long enough to enter
school Thanks to improved
medical treatment, nearly
half of the CF children born
today will live past the age of
21 One key element in insur
mg a longer and better life is
early diagnosis and treat-
ment
That is why the Spring
Special Event Campaign has
three parts: broadened
public education, improved
medical treatment, and
research to find a control for
the disease There are
presently 123 CF Medical
Centers supported by the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
