for July, Vaughn said. Mickel
Kane was the runner-up. Joe
Worthey was named “Fireper-
son of the Month,” with
Charlie Wood as runner-up.

Month” was Kevin Farmer;
Vicki Gress was the runner-up.

beyond the contracted jobs."

Aug. 30, the lowest reading
since May 28, when 61 was re-
corded.
The average high tempera-
ture for the month was 93 de-
grees and the average low was
69.2.
Thunder was heard on eight
days, and strong winds of 35 to
45 miles per hour from the
northwest hit Aug. 3. The
heaviest rain was .67 on the
28th; .51 fell Aug. 5.

tion were recorded, from Aug.
3 to 5, from Aug. 10 to 12, and

Absentee voting will begin

four seats on the board of
directors of the Hudson Bend
Volunteer Fire Department
(HBVFD. The election will be
held Saturday, Sept. 20, accor-
ding to Jane Vaughn, public
relations chairman for the fire
department.
Vaughn also noted the win-
ners of the awards given out
each month and commented on
the “sprucing-up” of the fire
hall.
Incumbents Dan Brinkman,
Jimmy Williams and Bob
Woodard are seeking reelection
to the board. Other candidates
for the four seats are Judy
Chapla and Don Swan.
Each household of qualified
voters in the 133-square mile
area covered by the fire depart-
ment has one vote in the elec-
tion.
Absentee voting will be held
from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday, Sept.
10-12. The election itself will be
held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
More grass fires
reported in July
Calls were down in every
category but one in the July
report of the Hudson Bend
Volunteer Fire Department
(HBVFD). Firemen responded
to 16 grass fires in July, com-
pared to only five in June.
Most other categories on the
monthly report were down by
50 percent or more, and three
areas recorded no calls at all:
mutual aid responses, toat
fires and accidents in which so-
meone was pronounced dead
on the scene.
July 4 was the busiest day for
the firemen, with three grass
fires and three collisions
reported. In all, they made
seven runs on Independence
Day.
