of all the filth Where will it end9
From Los Angeles The writer
who complained about dirty lan-
guage in movies asked. "Is that the
way people in California talk?"
Please tell her that nearly 27
million of us have social conversa-
tions and never use the F-word. We
are aghast at the change in moral
standards and feel just as outraged
as everyone else.
From Oxnard. Calif.: I m sick to
death of crude and vulgar language
How much more explicit can it get?
Would "Gone With the Wind " have
hcen a better movie if Clark Gable
had taken off his clothes and
jumped in bed with Scarlett
OHara? Why must decent people
be embarrassed in front of their
children by obscene words on
bumper stickers, gutter talk in the
mov ics and filth on TV?
From Corvallis. Ore.: You’ll get a
ton of mail from readers outraged
about the garbage they see in the
movies these days. Many will com-
plain. too. about the trash on TV.
radio and the lewd magazines for
sale everywhere. The bottom line.
Ann, is w hat can we do about it?
Dear Corvallis, and millions of
readers w'ho would like an answer
to that question:
Censorship is not the solution.
Once we start telling adults what
they can and cannot read or look
at. the next step is telling them what
they MUST look at. and that’s
fascism.
Don’t go to dirty movies and
don’t buy dirty magazines. When

Ritalin has several side effects, in-
cluding insomnia, nervousness, loss of
appetite, nausea, dizziness and
palpitations
On the positive side, the drug can
truly aid some children who exhibit
the inappropriate behavior of atten-
tion deficit syndrome, when used as
an integral part of the total treatment
program that includes psychological,
educational and social therapy.
DEAR DR GOTT I am currently
undergoing a root canal The proce-
dure has been painful from the start
and now my dentist has me on penicil-
lin VK 500 milligrams a day because
of an infection in the root I'm sick of
the whole procedure and question if
the many X-rays he has insisted on
might be harmful in pregnancy since
I am trying to have another babv.
What should 1 do’
DEAR READER Rwt canal work
can. indeed, be painful However, it is
an effective method used by dentists
to save a tooth Your options are to
seek a second opinion from another
dentist or to have the tooth pulled
Frankly. I think you're better off
with the root canal the use of penicil-
lin for dental infection is routine and
will not harm you Nor will the X-ray
examinations, as long as the dentist
shields your abdomen with a lead
apron The small amount of scatter
radiation from dental X rays is ac-
ceptable. given the benefits derived
from the X-ray tests
DEAR DR iXYTT For the past 15
20 years l‘ve been reading about satu
rahM and unsaturated fats and their
.d((C

effects on health Then there's polyun-
saturated fats My dictionary seems
to give ambiguous information
DEAR READER Fats ate classi-
fied by their weight in chemical
terms, their saturation.
Fats are composed of long chains of
carbon atoms, each of which has four
bonds — or hooks - that attach to
other atoms Carbon bonds that are
not taken up (by attaching to other
carbon atoms) readily accept hydro-
gen atoms The more carbon bonds at-
tach to hydrogen atoms, the more sat-
urated the fat.
Liquid fats have relatively few hy-
drogen atoms, hence, they're lighter
in weight and texture The most satu-
rated fat is candle wax. practically
every carbon has its full limit of hy-
drogen Therefore, hard fat (such as
animal fat. tallow and butterfat) is
saturated and solid at room tempera-
ture Other fats may simply be rela-
tively unsaturated or. at the extreme,
polyunsaturated
In general, saturated fats contain
high levels of cholesterol and are not
healthful in a diet Polyunsaturates
have less cholesterol and are consid-
ered to be superior to saturated fats
for people who wish to lower their
blood cholesterol levels
For more information. I am send
ing you a copy of my Health Report

should send 11 25 with their name and
address to I'O Box 91369. Cleveland.

the title
DEAR DR GOTT Can you disc uss
the good and bad of the drug Ritalin’
It has been recommended for my
grandson but his father refuses to al-
low its use
DEAR READER Ritalin (methyl-
phenidate) is a nervous system stimu-
lant. It is used primarily to treat nar-
colepsy (a disease marked by sleep
attacks) and attention deficit disor-
ders (formerly known as hyperactivi-
ty) in children Ritalin's mild stimula-
tion improves sleepiness,
distractibility, impulsivity and atten-
tion span
The medicine should be adminis
tered only under close medical super-
vision It is contraindicated for the
treatment of emotional disorders and
can accentuate anxiety, tension, agi-
tation and hypertension Its safety in
children under 6 has not been
Ntahlished.

Dear Ann Undent: I cheered
when I read the letter from the
woman in Fort Madison. Iowa She
had just asm Rain Man and
declared the ailing brilliant The
language however, spoiled the pic-
ture for her Had the dirty words
been omitted it would not have
hurt the film one iota
You said it wouldn't hurt Holly-
wood to clean up its mouth I agree
In fart. I ll go further and say it
r would help the box office My
husband and I go to very few
movies these days bixause of the
dirty talk I II bet millions of
Americans fed the same way -
KANSAS CITY. MO.
DtAR K.C.: Not only Americans,
but Canadians too. Here's a letter
from Vancouver.
Dear Ann lenders: My wife and I
have walked out of so many movies
because of the dirty language that
we now rent videocassettes and May
home. - Fed Up in B.C.
From Panama City. Fla.: Amen
to your comments about gutter talk
in the movies. While you were at it.
I wish you had said something
about the hedroom scenes on the
soap operas in mid-afternoon
They’re disgusting - couples nude
in hed. rolling around, leaving
absolutely nothing to the imagina-
tion. Rock bottom. I call it.
From Palo Alto. Calif.: I'm a
64-year-old male who has hern
around. Nothing shocks me. but
some things offend me. I’m talking
about the F-word in the presence of
my 15-year-old grandson. I’m
afraid to take the boy to the movies
again.
From Dallas: I work in a six-
screen movie theater My question:
Where are the parents of these kids
who flock to PG movies? If they
knew what their IS- and 16-year-
olds do during these movies they
would be shocked. These films are
provocative beyond belief.
From Sioux City. Iowa: Bravo!
Hooray! The woman from Fort
Madison was right on. We are sick
