Rabbi’s Column (Continued)
(Deut. 14:29), “U-ba’u ha-levi... ve-hager.. ./’“The levite and the
convert will come and eat, and God will bless them in all their
endeavors . . .” The Midrash says in regard to this biblical state-
ment that Moses asked God, “Is there no difference between the
levite and the convert in your eyes?”
God replied, “The convert is greater in my eyes because he
came to me of his own free will. It is as if a deer comes from the
desert and voluntarily joins a herd of sheep. The shepherd would
feed him and cherish him more than the sheep. And when the
shepherd would be asked why he was giving so much attention to
the deer he would say, ‘I had to give much time to my sheep until
they grew to what they are now. However, this one grew up all
alone in the desert and came to me to join my sheep of his own
will. How should I not cherish him?”’
