more than a half-million copies in hardcover, is being translated
into six foreign languages, and is now available in paperback.
A product of Rabbi Kushner’s own suffering on the death of
his 14-year-old son from progeria, the “rapid aging” disease,
the book presents a positive affirmation of Rabbi Kushner’s
continued faith in God, as well as rational answers to the many
questions that trouble people faced with such personal tragedies.
No one can fail to find strength and consolation in Rabbi
Kushner’s lecture, which will deal with the theme of his book ...
why the good suffer. His message will be an inspiration to every-
one, and if you have family members, friends or neighbors in
need of this message, be sure to invite them to be present on
Monday evening, October 22. Thanks to the Rauch Lectureship,
we at Beth Yeshurun are off to a most significant start to the
New Year.

helped so many to cope with suffering . . .
“When Bad Things Happen to Good People”
will speak at Beth Yeshurun
Monday, October 22 - 8:00 p.m.
TNT—SOS—VIP
Begins Sunday, October 21 at 9 a.m.
Please note the new starting time — 9 a.m. The ser-
vice and program will conclude at 10:30 a.m.
The reason we have scheduled TNT 30 minutes earli-
er this year is because our school children are tempo-
rarily attending classes at the I. Weiner School seven
miles away from Beth Yeshurun. Hence, by starting
earlier they will be able to conclude earlier and
leave Beth Yeshurun (either with their parents, or by
synagogue van, or by other cars that will be available)
to attend calsses at the I. Weiner School at 11 a.m.
The October 21 program will highlight two groups:
1. All members who joined the synagogue during the
past 6 months.
2. The students in our Religious School who attend
the 9-11 a.m. session. However, everyone is invited
to attend.
9 a.m. — Religious Service!
Torah Talk!
Delicious and scrumptious bagels
and lox etc. Breakfast!
Letter to Michael Korman.
Dr. Michael Korman, Educational Director, received the fol-
lowing letter concerning the ‘Portion of the Week’ program.
Dear Michael,
Judith and I want to take this moment to tell you how mean-
ingful the reading of the Sidra-of-the-Week booklet is to us as
a family. Every Friday night after Shabbos Dinner we sit
around reading the Summary of the Portion of the Week and
discuss not only the questions in the booklet but also other
related material in terms of parables and favorite stories we
have collected over the years.
Our children take turns reading the weekly Portions and
responding to the family discussions. The younger ones vie
with each other for the opportunity to be “the leader.”
To further describe the impact on our family of this newest
tradition, I might anecdotally share that whenever a vacation
or camping trip is planned so that we all can’t be together on
Friday night, the children gratuitously remind us “not to for-
get the Sidra-of-the-Week.”
Michael, you can see that we are most appreciative of being
able to add this custom to our Friday evening tradition. It is
not only a religious activity that is fun, educational and uplift-
ing, but one that further contributes to those precious intangi-
bles of family bonding.
Most cordially yours,
(Drs.) Harvey and Judith Rosenstock
The Rauch Lectureship, created in memory of Morris and
Birdie Rauch, has, for many years, presented outstanding guest
lecturers and other major events. In the past, the Rauch family
has brought to Beth Yeshurun such famous personalities as
Abba Eban. And this year, their guest star is non other than one
of today’s most popular authors, Harold Kushner, rabbi of
Temple Israel, Natick, Massachusetts.
Rabbi Kushner’s book, “When Bad Things Happen to Good
People,” was a Book-of-the-Month Club selection and on the
New York Time’s best-seller list for almost a year. It has sold
