“Rabbi Eliezer, the son of Rabbi Semeon says: ‘Because God’s
judgment of the world depends on the actions of the majority of
its inhabitants, and His judgment of each person depends on the
greater part of the latter’s deeds - if an individual does one good
deed, happy is he, for he has weighted the balance in his favor
and that of the whole world; if he commits one transgression,
woe to him, for he has weighted the balance not only against
himself, but against the entire world. ”

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE
THE PANTRY PROJECT
The Food Pantry Project of Beth Yeshurun’s Social Action
Committee is designed so that each member of the synagogue
is able to help someone in the Houston community who cannot
feed his or her family. To answer your questions:
1. What can I do?
a. Bring food for a family of 3 or 6 people that includes
staples listed below. This bag of food can make the difference
between a family going to bed hungry or fed!
b. Send a check payable to St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. Send to
Meryl Cohen, 5314 Braesheather, Houston, Texas 77096;
$15.00 to $25.00 will buy a bag of groceries.
c. Bring a can of food whenever you come to the synagogue.
d. Find 4 friends to give bags of food for a week.
2. Who get’s the food?
We send our food and money to the church assigned to us by
the Hunger Coalition, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Food
Pantry. The people are predominantly Hispanic, though
street persons in the downtown area often go to this pantry.
3. How often should I give?
If 5 families would give each week, we could ask each family
to give once each year. But if we only have a limited number of
givers, we will need them to give more often to keep up our
commitment to the pantry.
4. How did this project get started?
Members of the Social Action Committee met with Sister
Carla Dolce and saw the incredible need of indigent persons in
our own community. One trip to the Food Pantry at 1505 Kane
would convince anyone of the pitifully poor conditions under
which the pantry must operate.
5. Who has given to this?
Over 100 families! This month our givers include:-Bess
Schuman, David & Evelyn Leff, Ray & Frank Brown, Mr. &
Mrs. A. I. Schepps, Annette & Jerrel Davis, Paul & Jeanette
Saliman, Dr. & Mrs. H. S. Joachim, Mrs. Ben Yellen, Mrs. V.
S. Gaitz, Mrs. S. Gerson, Edith and Abraham Schnitzner,
Shel Mitelman, Grocers Supply Co., Maurice and Virginia
Hoffman, Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Gerber.
6. What groceries do I buy?
To feed a 3 or 6 person family: Rice 2 lb./51b. bag; beans
(pinto) 2 lb./5 lb.; oil - large bottle; tomato sauce 5 to 10 8-oz.
cans; green vegetable, 2 or 3 cans; yellow vegetable, 2 or 3
cans; canned fruit, 2 or 3 cans; vermicelli (noodles), 1 bag;
optional: macaroni, peanut butter, chunkey soup.
7. Where do I sign up?
To sign up, please contact: Meryl Cohen, 5314 Braes-
heather, Houston, Texas 77096. (Checks payable to St. Joseph
Food Pantry.
