TALE OF 2 FAMILIES (Continued)
of other refuseniks. Last year he was severely beaten on the
street by KGB and warned to quit his “Jewish” activities. He
refused. Now this intense, idealistic man struggles to support
his wife and three daughters, all the while, hoping to emigrate
to Israel.
The Soviet Jewry Committee has started a campaign in
behalf of these two families. The committee is printing and
mailing postcards of support to these families in Moscow and
Leningrad and to Alexei in prison. The committee asks that
members of the congregation pick up postcards in the office or
when otherwise available, and write their name and a short
message and leave the postcards for the committee to mail.
Letters from the West do a great deal to give support and
comfort to these refusenik families and also to show the Soviet
government that the refusniks are not alone and will not be
forgotten. Your name on these postcards will send a vital
message to those who need it. A few minutes of your time could
mean a lot to our fellow Jews in the Soviet Union. Please help.

A TALE OF TWO FAMILIES
IN THE SOVIET UNION
The Soviet Jewry Committee would like to tell you about
two families — one separated by the husband’s incarceration
in a Soviet prison camp, and another family, together,
literally close together, with all five family members living,
eating and sleeping in one room of a three room communal
apartment.
The first family is that of Natalia Ratner and Alexei
Margarik. Alexei is a young cellist from Moscow who was
arrested at the airport after drugs were planted in his
suitcase. He was separated from his wife and baby and sent to
prison camp where he was beaten, tortured, and punished in
solitary confinement. His father, Vladimir, who now resides
in Israel, visited Houston during his national tour when he
was appealing for support for Alexei. Meanwhile, Natalia
struggles alone in Moscow with her baby, worried about her
husband’s health and safety.
The second family is that of Leonid and Maria Kelbert of
Leningrad. Some members of our congregation visited Leonid
in his tiny room and can attest to his deplorable living
conditions. Leonid is an internationally known film maker
and theater director who was recently fired from his job. He
has produced Jewish plays which were presented in the homes

festive dinner for the teachers, students, and their families,
with Ray Ehrenshaft and other musicians playing Israeli
music.
