His Second Bar Mitzvah
Saturday, June 20 -10:00 AM
Let’s all rejoice with
Otto Shurberg
For over 40 years, Otto and Eva Lee Shurberg have been
members of Beth Yeshurun. A native of New York City, Otto
came to Houston in 1939 and, for many years, was active in the
wine and liquor business. He retired from business in 1972,
but he’s never retired from waging personal battles for his
many favorite causes.
Next Saturday morning, Otto will offer a special reading on
the occasion of his Bat Mitzvah, and daughter Barbara will
give a talk on “Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother.”

RABBI’S COLUMN: (Continued)
Reagan, Col North, and Admiral Poindexter also did wrong recently.
They turned over to Iran, our enemy, arms and ammunition. It is quite
possible that those bombs may still be fired on American ships or troops.
But, still, Mr. Weinberger does not go on a rampage and declare, “I
cannot conceive of a greter harm to national security” because it would
have been a lie. So, too, his statement in regard to Mr. Pollard is also a
gross exaggeration even though all admit that Pollard did wrong in
betraying the trust that America had placed in him.
My friends, today is Yizkor. Yizkor means to remember. I truly hope
that Israel will always remember how much good the U.S. has done for it
in years gone by. I also hope that the U.S. will remember that Israel has
always been its true friend. Similarly, I hope that both the U.S. and
Israel will remember the 27th chapter of the book of Proverbs (verse 6)
and the words of Shalom Aleichem.
In Proverbs we are told, “Ne’emanim pitz’ay ohev, v’natarot n’sheekot
sonay, ’’“Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy
are deceptive.” The occasional error of Israel is far better than the
so-called smiles of Gorbachev.
Similarly, Shalom Aleichem said, “Rather the bite of a friend, than the
kiss of an enemy.”
I truly hope that the U.S. and Israel will quickly re-cement the good
relations that has always existed between these two nations.
Amen!
