Yeshurun pens, magnets, note pads and other assorted good-
ies. The baskets were warmly received and appreciated by
our new families. On Sunday, August 25, the host families
and our new families met for brunch at the school, where
there were fun activities for the children, including a puppet
show by Nitsana Lazerus and singing and dancing with
Marilyn Albert. The brunch was a great suc-
cess and there was truly a feeling of warmth
and building connections among our fami-
lies.
Many thanks go out to the chairs of the
two sub-committees, Linda Epner, Day
School and Elisha Selzer, Beth Hayeled, for
helping to coordinate this project and to our
co-chairs in each school, Jodi Shaulsky and
Donna Cohen, Day School and Elisabeth
Morris and Patty Kagan, Beth Hayeled.
These people have committed countless
hours to this project and are committed to
ensuring that our new families feel con-
nected and welcome here at the Beth Yeshurun Schools. And
many thanks to all our host families for all of their hard
work and effort to make our new families feel welcome at
Beth Yeshurun, and to help us build relationships for the
future!
ast year, the Day School and Beth Hayeled sub-com
; mittees embarked on an ambitious project to welcome
B Vnew families into our Beth Hayeled and Day School
communities. The project was called the “Haimish Connec-
tion” and the goal was to make our schools a more
“Haimeshe” environment for our new families. Haimish
means warm, inviting, and is associated
with good feelings and a high level of com-
fort.
Last December, our Haimish Connec-
tion began the year with a Hanukah party,
welcoming new families into the school.
The Hanukkah party was lots of fun and a
huge success!
This year, our Haimish Connection
started its work early in the summer. They
began connecting new families with host
families so that they could help our new
families with the “anxiety” of beginning the
new school year. Host families were ex-
pected to meet prior to the beginning of the school year, ei-
ther at home or at the school, and host families were encour-
aged to take their family on a “tour” of the school. Each
family also received a beautiful welcome basket, with a Beth
Yeshurun Schools’ t-shirt, a Challah for Shabbat, Beth
