CITY BUILDING NOTES.
the
There is no city so prosperous but
that co-operation will be nefit if only
to perpetuate the prosperity.
If some cities would but take ad-
vantage of opportunities, there would
be no limit to their growth and pros-
perity.

LEAF WORM SHOWING UP.
Industrial, Social and Local News of Wadsworth
and Her People
Enthusiasm may load the w'agon to
its fullest capacity, but it takes finan-
cial assistance to make the wheels
turn.
Capital seldom enters where home
folks fear to tread.
Mud holes act as depressions in the
confidence of investors.
A little imagination will sometimes
blossom into great actuality.
When you have a prospective inves-
tor within your midst, land him—not
strand him.
When a stranger tells you of
.greatness of his home city, respect him
and his opinion, for he is usually
good citizen and a neighbor to
proud of.
Success sometimes depends
the ability to smile and then
some more.
Judge J. M. Sims reported yester-
day the appearance of the leaf worm.
He says they are not in the fields in
any great numbers, but advises the
farmers to prepare for a lively scrap,
as the next crop promises to be as
numerous as those of any previous
year. _ .
It’s well enough to inevstigate thor-
oughly everything undertaken, but
afterward get action.
ding of Mr. Charles
Wadsworth and Miss
Conger of Bay City.
Mr. Ben Besing, the gentleman that
bought the Arthur Longwell farm, is
erecting a house and barn on his farm.
There is strong talk of a blacksmith
shop being established in Wadsworth
in a very short time. This shop is
one ofthe things we have been pulling
for for the last six months and we
have every reason to believe it will
be a paying proposition.
Mr. A. H. Yerxa and wife of Buck-
eye were business and social callers
at Wadsworth Tuesday and took din-
ner with Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Barnes.
Mrs. Yerxa expressed herself as be-
ing greatly surprised at the growth of
Wadsworth since she saw it five or six
months ago.
Rev. J. B. Lee of Bay City is hold-
ing a series of tent meetings that
commenced Tuesday evening and will
very likely be carried on for two or
three weeks.
0n account of the delay of the ar-
rival of cement, work on the rjice
warehouse has been somewhat delay-
ed for a couple of days, but as the car
of cement is now here, work will be
resumed in the same speedy way.
Work on the cotton gin is almost
completed and so much so that we
expect to gin our first bale next week
There were a large per cent of the
booster club members present Tues-
day evening and a very interesting-
meeting was held.
Among the visitors out from Bay
City were Mr. Whittaker, E. B. Wells,
F. C. Halladay, J. R. Cookenboo, S.
Hightower, J. W. Gaines and Mr.
Guinn. The last gentlemen made us
very interesting and profitable talks
on the necessity of the farmers turn-
ing over one-fifth of their present
rice crop to the Rice Growers Asso-
ciation to be sold on foreign markets.
The Demagogue usually travels
alone, while the progressive citizen
finds companionship in a vast army
of up-builders.
Confidence will accomplish great
things in community building.
One of the best and most modern
improvements in which everybody
that takes interest in is that of a
complete telephone system, of which
will be installed inside of the next
thirty days. There is nothing that
will modernize our neighborhood, or
put it in closer touch with one an-
other as a good telephone system. It
puts the farmer in touch with his mer-
chant and the merchant in touch with
the farmer. In fact, it will put Wads-
worth in direct touch with the world.
The farmer can sit in his parlor and
sell his products on the highest mar-
ket and his wife can go visiting a doz-
en times a day without combing her
hair.
Mr. M. A. Nelson of the College-
port telephone system was in town
the past week and talked the matter
over with the farmers and merchants
and assured us that he would secure
rooms at the hotel and have things
lined up in working shape inside of
thirty days. He had the assurance
of more phones than he asked for but
that makes it that much more en-
couraging to him. We hope that ev-
ery farmer will see his way clear to
put in a phone for it will, without
doubt, be of very great interest to
everybody.
It will put us in touch with Bay
City for fifteen cents where hereto-
fore it has cost us twenty-five cents.
Dan Goodall, Killian Shafer, Joe
Ottis and S. C. Hagan departed Sun-
day as delegates from Wadsworth to
attend the Fermers Congress that con-
venes at College Station, Texas, July
28 to August 2.
Mr. Joe Shafer and family returned.
Friday from Humphrey, Nebr., where
Mrs. Shafer and the children have,
been visiting for the last two months.
One of the most interesting things
that has happened in our town for
some time was the advent of a fine
nine-pmind girl into the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Arthur Longwell July 24.
Mother and daughter are getting along
fine but as to Arthur—he has to be
called over from home every time any-
one comes into his store for drugs
or cold drinks, and as soon as he waits
on the customer, he tears out over
home again to look at that baby,
never stopping to get the money. We
will watch him for about 30 days and
if he does not in that time get so he
notices money again, a committee will
be’ appointed to look after his finance
until he becomes reconciled.
Mr. John Bunk has completed his
new residence just northeast of town
and has moved in. He has built a fine
home and will begin to enjoy life in
the right way, as it is equipped with
seven large rooms and a bath.
Mr. Bunk ranks among our best and
most prosperous farmers. He bought
his farm two years ago at sixty dol-
lars per acre and has paid for it in
two years, built his new home and we
have every evidence to believe he has
money left.

Our club is undoubtedly reaping
great benefits from the valuable talks
from our Bay City friends when they
visite us. We know them all to be
men of splendid business ability and
good judgment, and their experience
in the business world given to us in
our club meetings is very profit-
able to us of which we appreciate in
the fullest measure. Come again gen-
tlemen!
Honorable John W. Gaines
up for $2500 worth of our rice ware-
house stock Tuesday night
booster club meeting.
Dr. Vaughan of Buckeye is in town
most every day looking after the work
on his gin. He would come to Wads-
worth to live at once if there were a
house for him to live in.
If some man would put in about
$3000 in rental houses during the next
two months, he would be shaking
hands with himself at the end of the
year.
There is one embarrassment that
confronts Wadsworth at the present
time and that is the’ absence of houses
for rent. There is no less than four
professional men that would come to
Wadsworth at once if they could get
a house to live in. We also need
houses for working men and -their
families. The latter will be crowded
upon us in a very short time with-
out a house to go into. A good four-
room house can be built for about
seven hundred dollars that will rent
quick at ten dollars a month. Do you
catch that interest on the investment,
you men that own lots here, or the
man that is able to buy and build.
Some men that are getting five or
six per cent on money they have loan-
ed out think they are doing well with
their money, but if they ’will stop and
figure a moment they will see that
the same money invested in rental
property here will more than double
that which is loaned out. Just figure
ti for yourself.
This is no talk to sell town lots or
to Sell lumber the real facts of the
case is we are starving to death for
the want of houses to rent. Think of
the people it will take in a short time
to run our bank, our gin, and ware-
house. our public school and no telling
what may come yet. So let’s wake up
and put our money to work. It takes
houses to make a town.
