He, for one. couldn't
understand how a person
who had always been very
conservative could even
think about voting for
someone married to Hillary
Clinton. And, 1 couldn’t
i to fathom why
someone would want to vote
for someone who was so
paranoid that he would
investigate his own shadow
if it got too close.
The 1992 presidential
elections, though, were about
change.
I was tired of trickle-
down economics, and felt
the United States needed to
start investing in training
and apprenticeship
programs. I was also, and
still am, concerned about
health care reforms.
My husband, on the other
hand, liked what Ross Perot
had to say. And, he did say a
lot of things that people
wanted to hear. But, high-
strung. quirky presidents

And, what about THE

So, I don’t really like
Hilary’s philosophies on a
lot of things. I don’t have to
like them. I do like that she
is Involved in the White
House..She reminds me of
Eleanor Roosevelt.
Maybe White Water will
turn out to be Dark Waters, 1
don’t know. What 1 do know
is this: Rush didn’t run in ‘92
(thank you. God) and the
wrong Bush ran
president. No, I’m
talking George. Jr.,
talking Barbara.

putting up our tent, laughing,
and Joking. 1 showed off,
certain that he was watching
me. But something was
strange. He hadn’t moved (at
all), in a long time. Deciding
that now was the time to
make introductions,
grabbed two sodas and
walked over to him. The
closer I got, the more
mortified I became My hair
stood on end and my teeth
chattered. I was so glad I
hadn’t mentioned him to
anyone (Jealous me!) because
a big wood post with an old
plate on the top makes a poor
date.
Another time when I was
of high-school age. I returned
home to find my father in
the kitchen, talking on the
phone. I was excited to see a
watermelon on the kitchen
table! I ran into my room,
put my books down, and
hurried out, almost drooling
in my anticipation of the
treat. When I arrived in the
kitchen, I was bitterly
disappointed to see no
watermelon.
“Where is it? Where’s the
watermelon Mom bought?" I
demanded. My father Just
shook his head. not
understanding. Then he
turned around, and I saw it
again. It was his stomach,
near the kitchen table. I had
mistaken it for a
watermelon! (He was not fit
and trim like he is these
days.) When I told him of my
disappointment, he seemed
to take it very personally
and sent me from the room. I
sat on the front steps, all
dejected. No watermelon for
me that night.

I can’t speak for other
couples, but when it comes to
politics, my husband and I
Just don’t agree.
He wanted to vote for
Ross Perot in the last
presidential election. I
wanted to vote for President begin
Clinton and her husband.
Arguments in our house were
few. but heated.
Someone once told me
that if I had lived in olden
times (really old. not like my
husband's generation). 1
would have been the
storyteller of the village.
More like the blind
woman of the village.
People don’t realize Just
how nearsighted I am.
Without my contacts or my
glasses. 1 could not get
around.
Once, on a visit to my
sen’s school. 1 found myself
with just my prescription
sunglasses. 1 took them off
and proceeded to feel my way
around his classroom,
pretending to admire the
artwork, trying to maneuver
my way past the desks. 1
kicked a ball that rolled over
to me. deftly sending it under
a cabinet in tin* corner.
"Mom." my son
whispered to me. horrified,
“that was the class' hamster
in his exercise ball!"
I never went back, not
until he was in another
grade.

I never wore my glasses, and
contacts weren’t that
popular then. I was accused,
many times, of snubbing my
friends. I never did. I simply
couldn’t see them.
Once a group of us went
camping. 1 saw (ha!) a really
cute guy leaning against a
fence, watching us. We were
