Mary Beth Stewart of
Gainesville and Alton Ray
Chester of Fort Worth were
married at 6 p.m. June 1.
1996, at the Holiday Inn in
Gainesville.
The bride is the daughter
of Bobby and Christine
Simmel of Gainesville and
the late Glenn Hutchins of
Thackerville. The groom is
the son of Neoma Chester
and the late James Alton
Chester of Fort Worth.
Bill Freeman officiated
the double-ring ceremony.
During the ceremony
Jessica Scott of Durant,
Okla., the bride’s niece,
performed “To Be Loved By
You." Dwaine Scott of
Durant, Okla., brother-in-
law of the bride, performed
“The Vows Go Unbroken.”
and Eddie Renz of Sanger
performed “Long As I Live."
Given in marriage by her
stepfather, the bride wore a
candlelight tea-length dress
with fitted sleeves made out
of lace and pearls, with a
fitted drop waist and a full
skirt made of taffeta.
Maid of honor was Susan
Jones of Gainesville, friend of
the bride. Flower girl was
Katie Dreter of Lindsay, niece
of the bride. The guests were
registered by daughter of the
bride. Tes Stewart of
Gainesville and daughter of
the groom, Tifani Chester of
Arlington.
Best man was Lacy
Whitrow of Watauga, Texas,
friend of the groom. Ushers
were Dwain Pearson, brother
of the groom and Jennifer
Not in the back seat of my
car, you don't
- I
only use three. And the kids
and 1 were going to the lake
that day. He cried and
moaned when I told him this.
And when we brought the
car back that night without
a bit of sand in it, he was
really impressed. Then he
told me what he had done to
the van. IN the van.
He had dumped a huge
mug of coffee on the
passenger side, on the floor.
He’d panicked when he’d
seen the mess, and mopped
and mopped at it when he
got to work, but there was
still a big stain on the floor.
He apologized. I gloated. I
thought 1 was very gracious
about it. considering what he
has put me through for 11
years.
Nope, there wasn't any
sand in his car. But when
the sun comes and he’s
driving along, he might smell
something. Because no
matter how hard I scrubbed
and mopped and sweated. I
don’t think I got all the turtle
pee off the front seat. (The
poor thing was going to get
hit by a car. I had to get out
and save it!)
Somebody will have to
save me if he reads this
column. But- then again,
what are the chances he
will?

“They don't need to pack
a picnic lunch for a drive to
Denton. And why, oh why,
do you let them take cans of
Coke in the van? Whose
sucker is this on the seat?
Oh. no. bubble gum in the
ashtrays. That's it. That’s it!
No more eating or drinking in
the van!
“And another thing -
every time they bring a toy
out here to accompany them
on a trip to the grocery store,
they take the toy back into
the house with them when
you guys get back home. No
more piles of crap in this van.
1 mean it! Or so help me God,
I’m going to throw every toy I
see into the garbage. You
kids think I’m kidding? Just
tiy me."
I can
verbatim,
speech a million times before.
On days he announces that
he’s going to CLEAN THE
VAN. the kids and I leave for
the park. On foot. On bicycle.
Whatever. Just to get the
heck out of there before all -
you know what - flies loose.
As soon as he begins to
break a sweat, he gets mad.
And the lecture starts. I’m
going to tape it next time and
when I see him getting ready
to climb up on his soap box
to deliver his speech. I’m
going to turn the tape player
on. Think how much time
and effort it will save. (But I
probably will have to go out
and buy another tape player
after he smashes it and
throws it into a decomposing
Happy Meal bag.
I can't help it.They’re little
kids. Would he rather find
cigarette butts in the
ashtrays? At least they’re
only consuming bubble gum.
I’ve always maintained a
rather laid-back approach to
cleaning the van. Which is
why its maintenance has
been largely taken over by
him. To an obsessive-
compulsive person - this
person has to have his bath
towel thrice-folded and flufly
soft and fresh every morning
- a discarded gum wrapper
on the floor is tantamount to
attempted murder. He sure
married the wrong person.
Oh well, they say opposites
attract. Ours should be a
documented case.
But I have finally gotten
my revenge.
Recently we bought a
new van. and, a new car,
because the estimates on
fixing the old ones far
exceeded their book values.
This van is mine, the car is
his. Last week, he had to
take the van to work. I was
saddled with the car. It is a
i manual, with five (FIVE)
