Who do you think people try to please the most9 Family9 Friends9 Co-
workers9 Bosses9 Influential people9 or how about Yourself’ While these
responses are accurate in many people s lives, they don't really point us to
the One that all of us really should try to please. God Ultimately, it is His
opinion that really counts The Bible tells us "that without faith it is
impossible to please Him ” Our faith that He exists, that He loves us, and
that Jesus died and rose again for us is the key to really pleasing God That
desire to please Him should come from love and gratitude rather than
merely duty While it is true that God is merciful and gracious, we should
not lose sight of the fact that there are things that God does not like In
fact there are things that God hates Does it not make sense that if we
desire to please God that we would then refrain from acting in such a way
that He has said He detests9
Proverbs 6 16-19 says, “ There arc six things the LORD hates, seven
that are detestable to Him haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed
innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to
rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a man who stirs up
dissension among brothers ’’ Let’s examine each of these seven in more
detail
1) Haughty eyes - Our eyes reveal much of what is within us Haughty
eyes reveal an arrogant attitude, both towards God and other people I
know of only one “know it all” that is really worthy of that title, and that is
God Once there was a man who had a high opinion of himself who
stepped on the scales in a penny arcade and was delighted with the
statement he received from the machine Handing it to his wife, he said
with much personal satisfaction, "Here, look at this!" She took it and read
it aloud, “You are dynamic, a born leader, handsome, and much admired
by women for your personality " Giving it a second look, she added,
“Hmm, I see it’s got your weight wrong too!'" Be careful here If you are
thinking of someone else as being haughty and not yourself, then you or I
are susceptible to displeasing God wjth arrogance
2) A lying tongue - Not all lies are big and bold I lalf-truths flow so freely
and exaggerations too Lying brings shame, but truth is freeing
3) Hands that shed innocent blood - Most people would readily agree
with God on this one Murder is wrong This is one of those “big" sins
that many agree is detestable But don’t be deceived, all seven of these
sins are big sins Any sin is a big sin
4) A heart that devises wicked schemes - Notice that the heart is the
source here What a person eventuallv does do or does not do reflects the
beliefs and attitudes that originate in a person's heart A person can
become consumed with pursuing his or her own agenda When that
happens, it is conceivable to devise a plan that will get you there, no
matter the cost However the cost is too high if it yields a defiant
relationship with God, and ultimately it will wreak havoc in relationships
with other people Don’t become a relationship con artist, always trying to
work an angle to get what you want
5) Feet that are quick to rush into evil - Old habits are hard to break and
when posed with the opportunity, we can be prone to run the wrong way
But running the wrong way, towards evil, is a much harder race to run,
and one that we will never win Let’s also be carefill that we do not have
an “ambulance chaser” mentality This mentality is evidenced bv a person
who jumps at the opportunity to dive into something that doesn’t involve
them That person doesn’t need to be involved but seems to live for
controversy
6) A false witness who pours out lies - There is a story of a night
watchman for a railroad crossing who lived many years ago He was a
witness in a court case because he had been on duty on the night of an
