The bulldogs have not fielded
a track team since 1954, and that
year they entered only one meet.
The two years before that the
Bulldogs had been champions of
the Big State Conference in track.

According to Coach Okelberry,
the Bulldogs should be strong in
the sprints this year. Running on
the sprint relay team will be Fred-
die Hightower, Kenneth Goessler,
James Hennig, and Freddie Wend-
landt. These four will also handle
most of the individual sprint duty.
Taking care of the middle dis-
tance races will be Ivan Leschber,
Clarence Boening, Charles Moerbe,
and Billy Litzman.
In the field events Arlen Dun-
ham, Bill Tarin, J. D. Riesterer,

in Centerfield, and Erxieben finish-
ed up the job by fanning the next
two men on seven pitches.
He threw only 118 pitches in
the entire contest.
The Bulldogs scored two runs
in the first inning on a pair of
hits, two walks, a fielder’s choice.
Howard Woerner opened the con-
test with a booming triple to left
center.
TLC scored three runs in the
sixth inning on singles by Woerner
and Graeber plus two walks and
a fielder’s choice.
They added two more runs in
the bottom of the eighth on base
knocks by Graeber and Woerner,
a stolen base, an error, and Le-

Ray Erxieben, husky sophomore
righthander for TLC’s Bulldogs,
fired a brilliantly pitched no-run,
no-hit game past Texas Tech’s
Red Raiders in Seguin’s F a i r-
grounds Park to give the Bulldogs
a 7-0 victory in the finest pitch-
ing performance seen this base-
ball season.
Erxieben set the Red Raiders
down in order in every inning but
the second and fourth. Two suc-
cessive Bulldog errors in the sec-
ond frame put two Tech men on
with one out, but Erxieben struck
out the next two batsmen to re-
tire the side.
In the fourth frame, with two
out, Erxieben issued his only free
pass of the contest. However, the
runner was put out when he at-
tempted to steal second. Catcher
Billy Graeber fired a perfect peg
to keystone sacker Ken Dismukes
for the putout.
Erxieben saved one possible hit
in the first canto when he made
a neat stop of a hard grounder

CORREA BEATS TECH 2-0
Texas Lutheran’s Bulldogs swept
the second game of the Texas Tech
series Tuesday night by downing
the Red Raiders 2-0 on Pete
Correa’s brilliant one-hitter.
Tech’s only hit was a scratch
single down the right field line
in the eighth inning. Correa fan-
ned 15 and walked one in gaining
his third victory of the season.
TLC scored in the bottom of
the eighth canto on Elmer Neu-
mann’s double, an error, Eddie
Marburger’s single, and Correa’s
sacrifice fly.

BULLDOGS DOWN HORNED FROGS Fifteen Athletes
OF TCU 6-0 IN BASEBALL OPENER
Texas Lutheran’s Bulldog base-
ball nine opened their 1956 dia-
mond in a rousing fashion o n
March 9 when they downed TCU’s
Horned Frogs 6-0, behind the
three-hit pitching of Ray Erxie-
ben, in Seguin’s Fairgrounds Park.
Ken “Skinny” Dismukes, Bull-
dog second sacker, was credited
with the first Bulldog safety of
the season when he smashed a
single to Centerfield in the first
inning.
Catcher Billy Graeber scored
the first TLC run in the fourth
inning after he doubled to left-
field. Ken Hoffman got the first
RBI by singling Graeber home.
Erxieben allowed only three
singles, struck out nine, and walk-
ed five, in his brilliant nine in-
ning stint. Dismukes, Graeber, and
Shane LeStourgeon each rapped
a pair of hits to pace Bulldog
batsmen.
TCU Shuts-Out Bulldogs
The following afternoon, how-
ever, TCU gained revenge as they
shut the Bulldogs out by a 5-0
score.
Pete Correa absorbed the
for TLC allowing five runs
seven hits. Only two of the
Frog runs were earned as
Bulldogs committed four important
errors.
TLC managed only two hits off
of TCU pitcher, Bob McDaniel.
Billy Graeber had two
singles in three at bats.
Bulldogs Top Aggies
On March 17, the Bulldogs top-
ped the Texas Aggies in Fair-
grounds Park in Seguin by a 9-2
score. ‘I
The Aggies, Southwest Confer-
ence champs in 1955, managed
only four hits off TLC mounds-
man Ray Erxieben.
Billy Graeber paced Bulldog
batsmen with three hits in four
at bats. Graeber had a single, a
double, and a grand slam home
run to bat in six TLC runs.
Shane LeStourgeon and Ken Dis-
mukes each had a pair of safeties
for the Lutherans. Bulldog leadoff
man Howard Woerner walked
four times and scored three runs.

SPORT SNORTS
by Ron Birk
Well it happened. TLC’s one claim to fame, the fifteen-game
winning streak of the baseball team has come to an end. The Horned
Frogs from TCU sort of came thru in the clutch and upset our mighty
Bulldogs. This made quite a few faces long, and jerked at the tear
bag of a few of the more emotional of our fair sex here at TLC. Since
then the Bulldogs have lost another game, but we think that is
the last for awhile and that they will start another win streak that
will be just as long, if not longer than this last one. We are con-
vinced that the Dogs are one of, if not the, best college baseball team
in the state of Texas. And if no serious injuries or other unforeseen
disasters fall upon the black caps of the Dogs, we think they will
finish out this season unbeaten.
One of the things that makes us think so highly of the Dogs is the
way major league baseball scouts have been flocking to the Dogs’
games. There were no less than six major league scouts in the stands
of Fairgrounds Park Monday night when Ray Erxieben pitched his
no-hitter. That little feat in itself will probably attract many more
Yes, when major league scouts who are on the look-
out for number one ball players for their teams think enough of
TLC to go out of their way to see one of their games, who can deny
that the Dogs have a great team.
Probably the brightest spots in the Dogs’ play this year has been
the pitching of Ray Erxieben and Pete Correa and the hitting of Billy
Graeber. Ray’s no-hitter against Texas Tech, Pete’s fifteen strike-
outs against UCC, and Billy’s grand slam homer against the Aggies
have been, by far, the greatest moments in sports on the TLC scene
this year. And, by the way, these three are not helping the blood
pressure of those major league scouts we are talking about. A career
in Pro ball is theirs nearly for the asking.
Short Snorts . . . Many a razor is getting covered with dust and
rust during this beard growing contest . . . Maybe this calls for a
new sport, Intercollegiate beard growing ... A mass of Intra-mural
activity coming up in the near future . . . There will be a sport for
everyone, so there is no excuse for you not to take part in at least
one of them ... I wonder who it is that has been working out for
track in the stacks of the library? . . . Leave us close our column
on this sarcastic note; And then there was the lady who was so narrow-
minded she only had to wear one ear ring. . .
So long, sports.
Summers struck out for Alexander

Bates flew out for Bradley in 9th.
