To Increase Winning Record
Brewer's B-Team fell 24-0 Oct. 29 touchdown,
as the Texan B-team extended its
winning streak to five games. This
gives the team a 5-1-1 season record.
This record includes a 19-0 loss
to Bell, a 6-6 tie with Northside and
wins over Bishop Dunne, 30-0, Mans-
field 34-0, Weatherford 16-6, Diamond
Hill 18-0, and Brewer 24-0.
Brewer kicked-off to Sam Houston
and the kick went out of bounds on
the Texan 40-yard line. Halfback
Bill Fleming took the ball on the
first play to Brewer’s 45-yard line.
After four downs the Texans were
unable to move the ball and were
forced to punt. The punt was taken
by Brewer on the 5-yard line and
carried out to the 20. The Texan de-
fense then went to work and held
the Bears for four downs, giving
Houston possession of the ball. With
the ball on the 20-yard line, Quarter-
back Don Kirby carried the ball to
the Brewer 10-yard line for a first
down. Kirby kept the ball on the
next play and went over for the

Jimmy Matthews scored on a six-
yard romp around end. Terry Cozby
tacked on the extra point. In the
fourth quarter Big Sam scored on a
six-yard pass from Craig Kirk to
Cozby. Cozby’s extra point kick nevei’
developed, as a bad snap slipped
over the head of holder Mickey Ed-
dleman.
The last time Sam Houston had the
ball, Kirk limbered up his throw-
ing are and completed three con-
secutive passes to bring the Texans
11 yards from paydirt with 43 sec-
onds showing on the clock. Kirk’s
next pass slipped off the fingertips
of a leaping Troy Patridge and into
the arms of alert Brewer defender
Mike Clark.

The extra point run
was good to give Sam Houston an
8-0 lead.
Houston kicked off and it was fum-
bled by Brewer. Ronnie Simmons
recovered the ball, giving the Tex-
ans possession in Brewer territory.
Kirby took the ball over for a
touchdown on the next play. Flem-
ing carried the ball over for the
extra points to make it 16-0 at the
half .
Sam Houston kicked off and Brew-
er took possession of the ball at
the Texan 30-yard line. The Texan
defense once again held Brewer,
and they were forced to punt. Hous-
ton took the ball on the 40-yard
line. Sam Houston was unable to
move the ball and was forced to
punt. Brewer took possession
their own 2-yard line. Unable to
start a drive, they punted to the
50-yard line. The Texans took over
and didn’t stop until they had scored
again. This made the score 26-0 as
the gun sounded to end the game.

Brewer opened the scoring in the
first quarter on a one-yard plunge by

WINNING EIGHT—Sam Houston’s first intramural championship team
of the year is composed of Douglas, Snow, Smith, Larkin, Berden,
Critz, LeMay, McNari.
With Defeat of Diamond Hill Eagles
First district win of the season for
Sam Houston came with a 10-6 de-
feat of the Diamond Hill Eagles on
Oct. 23.
The game began with Terry Cozby
kicking off to Eagle fullback Tommy
Rayford. Rayford returned the kick
to the Eagle 28-yard line before he
was downed. Throughout the first
half the defenses of both teams dom-
inated the play, holding the offenses
to a scoreless tie as the gun sound-
ed to end the half.
The second half began with half-
back Jimmy Matthews returning the
kickoff to the Texan 30-yard line.
" The Texans then moved the ball to
the Eagle 17-yard line. This gain
was sparked by two long runs by
quarterback Craig Kirk and Mat-
thews and a pass play from Kirk
of Cozby. From there the Texans,
unable to move the ball, decided to
try a field goal. Cozby took the
honors, kicking a 28-yard field goal
to give the Texans a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles were not to be count-
ed out, however, and on a series of
pass plays found a hole in the Tex-
an defense that didn’t close-up be-
fore the Eagles had scored. The
touchdown came on a pass to end
James Renfro. The Texan defense
dug in and Larry Weir blocked the
extra point. This made the score
6-3, Diamond Hill.
The Texan offense dominated the
fourth quarter with a drive that
started on the Texan 15-yard line
and ended in the Eagle end zone.
Matthews made the score for the
Texans after Cozby set it up with
a big gain on a pass play. Cozby
also made the extra point and the
scoreboard read 10-6, in favor of
Sam Houston.
The Eagles then set up a drive
that was ended on a key play by
an alert defensive halfback. Half-
back Robert Cox intercepted a pass
in the closing seconds of the game
to give Sam Houston possession of
the ball. The Texan offense then
took over and ran the clock out
to give Sam Houston its first dis-
trict win of the ’64 football season.
