There is a new face at
Memorial Medical Center.
Roshanda Gray, the new
assistant administrator at the
hospital who began Jan. 7, said
she is excited to be at MMC.
“I’ve been a person who
believes that wherever I would
go and was given an opportunity
to be, I would most definitely
seize the day and make the
best of it and do the best job I
possibly could do. This is my
home now. I am excited to be
here,” Gray said.
Gray is a Texan, but has
worked throughout the United
States. She served as a system
manager of community benefits
and initiative for Provena Heath
System in Mokena, Hl. and later
as a director of perioperative
service for Schneider Regional
Medical Center in the Virgin
Islands.
“I’m a Texan. I was born
and raised in Jasper, TX.
It’s in my blood,” Gray said.
“Throughout my career path,
I had an opportunity to work
at the corporate level while I
was Illinois, and being at the
corporate level is great when
you’re really passionate about
healthcare. Sometimes you
want that grassroots, and I
wanted to get more experience
in operations in healthcare and

one has to be a good follower.
“I’m very confident in
being in the roie of assistant
administrator,” Gray said. "It
gives me an opportunity to
follow a great leader here as well
as, when necessary, step into the
leadership role as appropriate
when he’s out...I see myself as
a change agent and a visionary,
but yet compassionate. We’re in
healthcare. You have to have a
balance. So far everyone has
been just great.”
She added that making the
move to Port Lavaca was a
“great choice” for her.
“The organization
on when I interviewed the
team here, they were very
welcoming. I could really since
the closeness and the family as
it relates to a small town. Born
and raised in a small town, that
was really enticing to me and I
had an affinity for that. I didn’t
really get that a lot on the island
because I wasn’t from there
and working at the corporate
level was a different type of
environment as well, so it was
the right time for me in my
career as well as my personal
life to make the transition back
to Texas. It’s almost full circle
for me. I’ve finally made it back
to Texas,” Gray said.
While at MMC, she hopes to
see improvement with in the
fac ility as well as its relationship
with the community.

us. When I went to the island, I
eventually got a little homesick,
being there for so many years
with a little baby. I started
seeking opportunities back
on the mainland, stateside. I
was given an opportunity to
work at a facility, a hospital
in Oklahoma. There, I was the
assistant administrator where
I oversaw (human resources),
corporate compliance and
clinical services. When the
(chief executive officer) left
and got afforded another great
opportunity in Austin, TX, I
was appointed by the board to
be the interim CEO, so f did
that for a few months, helping
with a transition plan with
the purchase of the hospital.
It was being purchased by the
Muskogee Creek Nation Tribe
in Oklahoma. I stayed there
through the end of the year,
roughly.”
While in Oklahoma, Gray
said she began talking with
MMC in hopes to be close to
family in Texas.
“In the meantime there was
back and forth conversations
with this facility here. Because
I’m from Jasper, it was a whole
lot closer to my family than
Oklahoma. You take a nine-
hour drive and you cut that in
half. I think it’s a no brainier,”
Gray said.
With her past experience,

external vendors when they
come through the door,” Gray
said. “It’s a whole mental map
of change when it comes to
areas of improvement, as far
as our culture change. “We
got new construction ready to
roll out for our clinic across
the street. That’s a big project,
a big endeavor. There’s a big
community need. The brakes
are not on. We are moving.
I think that momentum is
there and when you have it,
you really have to embrace it
so that you don’t fail to seize
the opportunity of improving
healthcare for this community,”
Gray added.
She also said she recognizes
the technology and other
advancements MMC has to
offer.
“I looked at the facility when
I walked through. This facility
has so much it is offering that
when I was in Oklahoma, or even
on the island, we didn’t have the
services or the technology or
the types of equipment that we
currently have in this building.
We have imaging equipment
that is top notch...Me coming
in from the outside, even
though I’m a Texan at heart, I
can really appreciate what this
organization has to offer and
I think sometimes as locals,
we become complacent,” Gray
said.
Gray added that community
involvement is important in a
hospital facility. She said her
goal is to lead a strong team at
MMC.
“I learned very early on that
you have to get community
engagement and input because
it’s their hospital,” Gray said.
“When we do things here we
always have to be mindful
whatever plans we plan. We
have to try to execute and
then implement what the
community is saying, what are
the needs and are we going to be
able to provide those services to
those we’re serving.”

that’s where the opportunity
presented itself in the Virgin
Islands.
"Being a non-clinician
yet being trained as an
administrator, I was given one
of those unique opportunities to
oversee a clinical nursing area,
which is perioperative service.
(That is) surgery, recovery
room, pre-admission testing,
central sterile, those elements
and worked very heavily with
a lot of surgeons, so learning
the book of business, the day-
to-day operations and learning
how to build relationships
with the medical community.
I think it allowed me to see a
lot of achievements under my
leadership, but with a great
team there at the hospital and
over a period of time.”
Gray comes to Calhoun
County with her four-year-
old son, Ian Jr. Her fiance, Ian
Thomas, often visits Texas.
“I had a baby while I was on
the island, met someone I truly
love and that is our son,” Gray
said.” He’s self-employed. He’s
a licensed contractor on the
island. He’s a second generation
contractor, so you could say it’s
kind of in his blood to do what
he’s doing. He’s in construction
so he builds on the residential
and commercial sides.
"His business is established
in the islands. He travels back
and forth, which is okay for
