“I was born and raised

a member of First Baptist

Smith said. “I’m not a politician.
I’m just an ordinary guy who
feels like we need to make
some changes in our city to the
government that I feel is not
getting done. That’s what made
me want to run for office. I feel
like I can bring some different
leadership to the table and try to
bring some professionalism and

if we wouldn’t have closed that
business, my mother would

her to retire, so that’s why we
did.”

Why are you running
for this office?
I believe the city is going
through some important
changes and that District
1 needs new, responsible
leadership. I believe we need
to encourage cooperation
between the city and the
county governments. I also
believe that we need to explore
ways that we can help Port
Lavaca grow, and be proactive
in bringing new businesses
and residents to Port Lavaca.
Authentic Mexican food,
traditional Mexican dances
and community recognition
will all be a part of the annual
Cinco de Mayo reception at

In the United States,
Cinco de Mayo is observed on
May 5 as a day to celebrate
Hispanic heritage and
pride. In the state of Puebla,
Mexico, the date is observed
to commemorate the Mexican
army’s victory over French
forces at the Battle of Puebla
on May 5, 1862, under the
leadership of General Ignacio
Zaragoza Seguin.
Aron Luna, president of
the League of United Latin
American Citizens (LULAC)
Council 671, in Port Lavaca,
expects 200 to 300 people for
the event.

The scavenger hunt, which
will be held partly indoors
