“They can have booths,
that’s fine. There will also be
tables where people can set
up,” Hines said. “And we’re
continuing to look to see who
else is going to be there.”
Admission is free for all
prospective employees, and
costs vary for employers at
the event. For businesses that
are members of the Chamber,
the cost is $50 while a table
for non-members is $150.
Employers can also become a
member of the Chamber and
register for the job fair for $50.
Hines, along with
Samantha Bell at PLNR, said
they are continuing to take
applications for businesses
interested in participating.
“We have a log of
places participating. We’re
continuing to get ready for this
first one,” Bell said. “This job
fair was a short turnaround
so some businesses weren’t
able to participate, but this is
the first of a number of job
fairs. We’re not limiting the
type of industry, and it’s open
to anyone wanting to provide
employment opportunities
to Port Lavaca and the
surrounding area.”
Hines and Bell suggested
that prospective employees
bring an updated copy of
their resume with them.

Total revenue for January
was 314,084 short tons,
Hausmann reported. Total
revenue tons for the first seven
months of fiscal year 2015 was
2,197,588.2 short tons. This is an
18.6 percent decrease compared
to last year, according to the
director.
Hausmann added that ship
traffic has “steadily picked
up” throughout Dec. 2014
and January with ship loads
increasing.
“We expect to continue
seeing an increase in traffic
through the port,” Hausmann
said.
For February, 15 vessels
have arrived or are scheduled
for arrival.
Also during the port
director’s report, Hausmann
said foam was used to fill voids
near the west end of the general
cargo dock, and the project
was completed Jan. 15. Port
engineer David Knuckey said
the project stabilized the area
and some portions were lifted
“a couple inches.” He added he
is working to seal joints in the
concrete in that area.
Clifford Hillman, of
Hillman Oysters, addressed
the board during the public
comment portion.

“All we’re asking that

Hillman said.
He also acknowledged
the “fear that it may be taking

The Calhoun
Authority approved an option
to lease with GulfMark Energy,
Inc. at the regularly scheduled
meeting Wednesday morning.
The option was for six
months on a 10.63-acre tract of
land located directly east of the
Joslin Plant at a rate of $5,000
per month for a total of $53,150.
Additional administrative costs
were $1,750.
Port Director
Hausmann said
approached him about the
option due to the drop in
oil prices. Hausmann also
acknowledged that the board
had previously stated they
would not enter into any more
short-term lease options.
“With oil at $50 a barrel,
I don’t know if the demeanor
is the same as when oil was at
$100 a barrel,” board president
Randy Boyd said.
Hausmann said there
were other prospects about
that area, but nothing specific.
Board member J.C. Melcher
said he was concerned that
the area would not be available
for a long-term lease if oil
prices increased in the next six
months.
During the port director’s
report, Hausmann said that 81
vessels arrived in January Of
be interviewed on the spot
because they might be,” Bell
added.
The job fair came about
as a joint venture because
PLNR often has difficulty
filling positions, according to
Bell. She said she approached
Hines about spreading the
word that jobs are available in
the area.
“We do know this area
has great job potential,” Bell
said.
Hines agreed.
“There is a lot of interest
in doing another one. We’ll
probably be doing another
one around the first part of
June,” Hines said, adding that
the Chamber is considering
holding resume workshops
and mock interviews to help
people refine their skills.
“This is the first effort of
the Chamber and a partner
to help not only businesses
of Port Lavaca and the area,
but to help people looking
for jobs and trying to be
more supportive of whole
community,” Hines said. “We
plan do more in future, and if
folks have comments, like if it
was good or we should look at
changing anything, I welcome
feedback.”
