“I was very excited,” she
said. “The Crow makes funny
comments. It says, ‘Caw, caw’ a
lot.”
Williams believes The Snow
Queen is a funny and interesting
story that an audience will enjoy.
“I think people need to
come and watch it,” she said.
Caylee Herren, 10, of Port
Lavaca, who plays Gerda, will
perform in her first theatre
production.
“I auditioned to get a feeling
of being in front of people, to
learn from the experience and
to learn all the lines. Gerda has
149 lines,” Herren said.
She will practice with her
parents to learn the lines.
“I am going to study like
crazy,” she said.
Herren auditioned
Frostbite, Flora and Gerda.
“I wanted to be Gerda the
most,” she said. “She has the
most lines, but that is not the
only reason. She is very humble,
and she is not self-absorbed
or snobby. She is a really nice
person, not mean, but really
sweet.”
Herren believes emotion
will make Gerda come to life.
She was nervous about the
audition.
“I took deep breaths and I
counted to 10. Then, I went out
there and had a lot of fun, the
fun I wanted to have,” she said. “I
think I will enjoy being in front
of people and speaking with a
lot of emotion and putting a lot
of effort into it.”
Weaver’s hope for each
production she directs remains
the same.
“I’m hoping those attending
will simply enjoy the show and
all of the unique and funny
characters. I hope they go home
with an autograph from their
favorite character,” she said.

Having a personal story
to go with the fundraiser
helped students understand
the realities of having cancer,
Barecky added.
“They were excited
about raising money, but also
knowing Lauren and then
when they brought money,
they would say, ‘Will you tell
Lauren how much we have
now,’ so it made it more real
for them to do. They really
enjoyed it,” Barecky said.
The students were also
excited.
“Well, Ms. Barecky gave
us little boxes that we had to
put together,” Chavez said. “It
wasn’t that hard. They were
flat and you had to open it and
then you had to put a flap in
here and a flap in here, and
there was a little thing that
would say how much money
is in there. It would say the
total amount and you would
have to write it down. I didn’t
because I put money in almost
single day, so then what we did
is Ms. Barecky had a big box
and it said, ‘Pennies for pasta,
Ms. Barecky’s class, second
grade.’”
“And then you open your
little box and we would pour it
in the big box,” added Johnnie
Bird, another student from
Barecky’s class.
While the students were
excited to help and learn
about Graham, they said they
were also excited for their
pasta party. During their pasta
party, Barecky said Graham is
planning to attend.
Bird said she hopes to
get bowtie pasta, her favorite
kind.
“We finally did it, we
thought we had enough money

Tia Williams, 12, of Port
Lavaca, who plays the Crow, is
ready to perform in her second
PLMST children’s production.
She was Ratty Tatty in The Pied
Piper of Hamelin last year.
“It was really fun. I just
enjoyed it and made it feel like
it was real,” Williams said of
his Pied Piper role. “I like being
in front of people and I like
pretending to be someone else.”
Williams wanted to
audition for The Snow Queen in
order to perform again and meet
new people. She auditioned for
the parts of Gerda, Flora and
Frostbite, but Williams is happy
about the role of the Crow
because she gets to play the

and when they announced
the winners, we were pretty
excited,” Chavez added.
“We couldn’t even hear
the second or third because we
were so excited,” Bird added.
Silvas’ fourth grade class
came in second raising a total
amount of $232.51 and Dawna
Meeks’ fifth grade class with
$206.01.
Silvas said she took a
similar approach as Barecky
in teaching her students about
blood cancers.
“I told my class that a lot
of them are kids that we’re
helping, and think about how
hard it is to be a kid everyday
and then be a kid with a blood
cancer. It’s that much harder.
Sometimes you can’t go to
school,” Silvas said. “For my
guys, it helped them see that,
‘I think my life is pretty hard
everyday, just think about how
it is for them.’”
In addition to Student
Council students helping
to organize the fundraiser,
teachers helped out as well.
“We (the teachers) kind
of did a lot of the background
stuff like passing things out
to teachers, taking the coins,”
Silvas said. “The sponsors, we
took the coins after they were
turned in and we counted
them at H-E-B (Grocery). At
H-E-B, they have a Coinstar
and they have a donation for
LLS, and anybody can donate
there and you get a little tag
and we sent our tags in.”
Silvas said she hopes next
year’s event is even bigger.
“We want people to know,
‘Hey, this is what J-R can do,’
because we’re just a little
school in Port Lavaca,” Silvas
said.
approach to the fundraiser
and teaching her students
about people with blood
cancers.
“I wanted to make it more
real,” Barecky said. “We tell
them that kids are sick, but
they may not know anybody,
so a family member of mine
had lymphoma and leukemia.
She had stage four. What I did
was I told them all about her.
I showed them pictures from
when she was sick and from
now when she was better.”
Her students ran with
the idea, making posters
and videos for Barecky’s
brother-in-law’s sister, Lauren
Graham, who lives in Corpus
Christi.
“We would talk about her.
We made a video and sent it
to her. And then she sent a
video back to us, explaining
her journey through cancer,”
Barecky said. “She kind of
helped the kids know that
kind of stuff.”
“I didn’t want my kids
to bring money just to win
pasta,” she added. “I wanted
them to bring it to help kids
like Lauren who had it. She’s
28 now and she had it when
she was younger.”
Gavin Chavez was one of
Barecky’s students who was
excited to help Graham and
learn about her story.
“We learned that she had
had cancer like all the other
kids we were fighting for with
the pennies for pasta. There’s
actually a poster outside our
room,” said Chavez. “We all
signed it she put me and some
of my other friends to hold it
and we said, ‘You’re the best
Lauren,’ and she took a video
of it and she sent it to Lauren.”
