first time buyers in our com-
munity. It is having affordable
housing options. It is having
more places for people to get
together for entertainment or
socialize.
“It is also enhancing the
curb appeal of the city. It is the
beautification of Port Lavaca
and finding funding to help
eliminate and prevent blight,
ft is revitalizing Main Street
by focusing on improvements
and bringing more business
downtown.”
Moore has attended sev-
eral comprehensive planning
meetings and said residents
are ready to see Port Lavaca
thrive.
“From the comprehensive
planning meetings we had res-
idents want to see Port Lavaca
be its best,” Moore said. “Resi-
dents want to see more family
activities, waterpark devel-
opment, retail shopping and
tourism infrastructure.”
Moore also touched on
how community development
can positively impact tourism.
She wants residents to shop lo-
cal and add to the Port Lavaca
economy.
“When residents spend
money in our community it
generates economic growth
and creates jobs,” she said.
“Anytime our residents leave
for goods and service that
is money Port Lavaca loses.
When residents feel good
about their community, they
want to be in their community
and let others come experience
their community as well.”
Moore’s vision is to cre-
ate a unique travel experience
that will draw tourism to Port
Lavaca. She plans to cultivate
the brand of the city and in-
crease the online activity for
the city.
“Tourists are always look-
ing for a new destination and
why should Port Lavaca not
be that place,” Moore said.
July 12, 1951 - Flooding in the
Midwest claimed 41 lives, left 200
thousand persons homeless, and
caused a billion dollars property
damage. Kansas City was hardest
hit. The central industrial district
sustained 870 million dollars in
property damage.

“Tourism development, first,
involves building a general
awareness of Port Lavaca.
Houston is only two hours
away, and people would defi-
nitely make the drive to Port
Lavaca if they knew about it.
They usually drive out to Ke-
mah or Galveston, so people
are looking for other places to
visit.”
“Most tourists use the in-
ternet to plan their vacations,
so we are making sure our
website is up to date and at-
tractive,” Moore added.
“Online is not just impor-
tant to provide information
to tourists, but it is a way to
provide information to our
residents,” she said. “During
Tropical Storm Bill the city
website kept continuous up-
dates about conditions. Sev-
eral thousand people saw the
city Facebook page posts, so
we are moving in the right di-
rection.”
Moore also plans to build
around the idea of “winter
break.” She believes it can be
a positive market for the city.
Moore added that Port Lavaca
was on the verge of greatness
and was excited to be part of it.
“We need to capitalize on
the idea of winter in Texas,”
Moore added. “It is a great op-
portunity to capture that in
the middle of December peo-
ple can still go to the beach.
We should design a campaign
around winter break like we
market summer and spring
break.”
“The key,” she said, “is
to make sure we have activi-
ties that bring tourists in and
keep them coming back. We
also want to get people passing
through to stop and spend the
night. Port Lavaca is on the
cusp of great things, and I’m
excited to be here to make our
community better.”

Port Lavaca tourism and

director Katrina Moore ad-
dressed the Calhoun County
Democrat Club Thursday at
the American GI Forum.
Calhoun County Demo-
crat Club President, Evelyn
Burleson, said she was proud
to bring another great city
leader in to speak to the club.
“Tonight our speaker is
the new tourism/community
development director for the
city of Port Lavaca,” Evelyn
Burleson said. “We look for-
ward to hearing her vision for
our area, so we can all help her
towards that goal. We want to
be helpful and educated. One
of the big goals of the Demo-
crat Club is to educate our citi-
zens on our own county.
“Everything starts at the
root and we need to be aware
with our local government,”
Burleson added. “When I look
at Calhoun County we have all
these young people coming in,
and I feel like we are on the
right road. I’m so excited for
our city. I want to see people
enjoy being right here in Port
Lavaca because we have a lot
to offer.”
Moore hails from the
City of Houston and is excited
about the opportunity she sees
in Port Lavaca. She opened by
discussing community devel-
opment and its impact on the
city.
“Community develop-
ment is helping people live
better individually and in a
community,” Moore said. “It
is helping build a more quali-
fied workforce. It is helping to
get young people that have left
the community to come back
and sustain our local work-
force. It is finding funding to
help with home repairs and
down payment assistance for
