Head coach Daniel Castillo huddles with his Sandies after the completion of an inning. Calhoun lost two consecutive games to the
Foster Falcons to fall in the regional quarterfinal round of the playoffs.
The Calhoun Sandies soft-
ball team’s season came to a
close Saturday as they fell 0-2 in
a best of three series against the
Foster Falcons in the regional
quarterfinals.
Game one
Calhoun lost game one of
the series 10-0 Friday night in
five innings after the 10-run rule
was invoked.
The Sandies struggled in
the first inning defensively, al-
lowing the bases to get loaded
due to two errors and a walk.
Brett Coleman made Calhoun
pay for its errors with a two-run
single. Foster took a 2-0 lead, but
was not finished.
A sacrifice fly and a single
drove in two more runs, and the
Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead
to end the first inning.
The Sandies offense had a
tough time offensively against
Kacie Pryor, Foster’s ace. Cal-
houn was able to only muster up
three hits. Mariah Wilson and
Cat Hernandez each recorded a
single while Analiza Gomez hit
a double.
Foster scored in the second
and third innings with two one-
run producing singles. The Fal-
cons held a 6-0 lead at the end of
the third inning.
The Falcons bats continued
to stay hot in the bottom of the
fifth inning with two more runs
to give them an 8-0 lead.

put up seven runs.
They scored on a two-run
double, an error, a sacrifice fly
and a three-run homerun by To-
var. At the end of three innings
played, Foster held an 11-1 lead.
Foster tacked on one more
run in the top of the fourth in-
ning to make the score 12-1.
The Sandies fell in order in
the fourth inning and had one
more chance at keeping their
season alive.
Calhoun again went down
in order in the bottom of the
fifth inning, and the 10-run rule
went into effect. The Sandies fell
in game two 12-1.
The Sandies finished off
their season, including the play-
offs, with a 23-11-1 record.
After a tough loss to a tough
are the deepest Calhoun has
gone in 11 years. Castillo let his
team know that he was proud of
them for getting back to the San-
dies softball winning ways.
“I told them we are excited
and glad that we got back over
here. We used to do it quite a bit.
I just told them we have to con-
tinue working hard,” Castillo
said.

team, Sandies head coach Dan-
iel Castillo tipped his cap to the
Falcons.
“They came out alive and
hit the ball well. They hadn’t hit
like that in district the whole
time we played them. They are
a good team, and they came pre-
pared. They just out hit us,” Cas-
tillo said.

That one-run came on a sin-
gle by Tori Tovar to give the Fal-
cons a 10-0 game one win.
Game two
The Sandies played a better
defensive game two, but the Fal-
cons hot bats were too much in
the 12-1 loss Saturday night.
Coleman struck first for
Foster with a bases loaded two-
run single to give Foster a quick
2-0 advantage.
Dahlia Ortiz led off the
bottom of the first inning with
a bunt single. Two batters later,
Zoe Flores moved her to second
on a fielder’s choice. Ortiz then
stole third base during Lexi
Carabajal’s at bat.
Carabajal took a 1-2 pitch
and singled to right field, which
drove in Ortiz from third to give
Calhoun its first run of the se-
ries. At the end of inning one,
Foster led the Sandies 2-1.
Foster hit three consecutive
singles to begin the second in-
ning. Pryor roped a 3-1 pitched
up the middle, and two Falcons
came around to score. Foster ex-
tended its lead 4-1.
Hayleigh Hill relieved
Flores in the circle for the San-
dies and finished off the inning
without any more damage done.
Calhoun went down in or-
der in the bottom of the second.
Foster took advantage of the
quick inning in the top of the
third inning.
The Sandies were sure
handed defensively until the
third inning. They committed
two errors in the innings. Foster
jumped on the opportunity and
