The Calhoun Sandcrabs
won the ultimate chess match
to claim the district title against
rival Calallen, 17-6, at home last
Friday night.
In a defensive battle, the
Sandcrabs defense came out on
top, forcing four turnovers and
holding the Calallen offense to
only six points.
“Well, if people came here
thinking this was a going to be a
shootout, we knew it was going
to be different,” Sandcrabs
Head Coach Richard Whitaker
said.
The game had two defenses
that were getting after it,
Whitaker said, and two offenses
that were trying to find their
way.
Sandcrabs linebacker Cade
Kveton said it was amazing
holding Calallen to only six
points, and he said he and fellow
linebacker Elijah Harvey played
great. He added that he and
Harvey did a fantastic job.
The Sandcrabs got on the
board first with a 23-yard field
goal by Joseph Quezada with
10:04 left in the first quarter.
The first touchdown of the
game came on a 37-yard score by
Sandcrabs quarterback Conner

Voter turnout was deemed
satisfactory for the 2019
Constitutional Amendment
Election Tuesday.
Of the 12,420 registered
voters in Calhoun County,
1,433 (11.54 percent) voted.
There were 459 cast during
the early voting period, 959
on Election Day, and 15 by
absentee vote.
“It’s sad that it was only
11 and a half percent, but it
was a good turnout,” said
Sandra Witte, Democratic
Party Chairman.
Republican Party
Chairman Russell Cain and
Vice-Chairman Connie Hunt
echoed that sentiment.
“The voter turnout was
really good,” said Hunt. “I
hope we have this kind of
turnout in the primaries and
General Election.”
This was the first election
for Election Administrator
Mary Orta.
“Things
smoothly,” she said.
Witte noted that the
election went well and that it
went well for Orta.
“All the ladies in the
Elections Office do a good
job,” she said.

De La Garza said, in an
interview after the meeting,
that he has two goals in
revising the bylaws: board
members receiving pensions
and making the per diem
optional.
“The way I wanted it
worded was if a commissioner
was currently receiving a
pension, they could keep it,
but new board members would
not be offered the pension,”
said De La Garza. “And, if they
left the board and came back,
they could not get the pension
again.”
As for the per diem, De La
Garza said he wants to make it
optional for board members to
accept it.

The Calhoun Sandcrabs
host the Sharyland Rattlers in
the opening round of the Texas
UIL Football Playoffs this Friday
in Sandcrab Stadium.
The Sandcrabs will be
taking on a team that will be
throwing the ball a lot more
than running it, according to
Sandcrabs Head Coach Richard
Whitaker.
Whitaker said Sharyland
has an “outstanding”
quarterback, good-sized
receivers, and a running back
that runs hard, and their defense
is “very silent.”
“Just like last year matching
us against Pioneer. That was
a tough matchup for the first
round. Sharyland is not going to
be any different,” Whitaker said.
Sharyland is a perennial
powerhouse playoff team, year in
and year out, Whitaker said, and
they have a lot of experience. He
added that his team is preparing
for a big game this Friday.
The Calhoun defense will
face a challenge this week with
cold weather coming down from
the north, and Whitaker said not
being able to practice outside is
concerning.
“When you’re facing a team
that is a spread team, you’d love
to be outside where you can
throw the football around. It’s
kind of hard to do that in the
gym,” Whitaker said.
The Sandcrabs will prepare
for their 11th playoff run under
the veterans and honor them
and let them know that we
honor them,” Torres said.
Torres added it is
essential for the “student
body” to honor the veterans
because if a student doesn’t
have a veteran in their family,
Monday.
Jacque Rudd Torres,
a member of the Veterans
Council, talked about the
importance of honoring the
veterans in the county.
“First of all,
