“catastrophe.”’
Bartels, who has been driving a tow
truck on and off since 1998, and three other
Jordan Towing employees are expected to
stay a minimum of 90 days. They arrived
in Brookhaven on Nov. 8. They are staying
in an RV.
“Towing companies from different states
are here and have brought in about 10,000
cars total,” Bartels said. “That’s not even
putting a dent in it. The lot we are putting
the cars in is full, and they have to open
another lot.”
Bartels’ team is towing cars at night
because of heavy traffic during the day.
Bartels has experience towing after
natural disasters. He worked in Bastrop
after the wildfires there, and he worked
the Joplin tornado in Missouri.
“This experience is not as bad,” he said.
“The tornado in Joplin took out houses.
We have houses damaged by water here,
but the water damaged many more boats
and cars. Boats are floating face down in
the bay so we can’t get to them.”
“You have people who had 3 to 8 feet of
water in their house, and in Newark, they
had a 10-foot tidal surge,” Bartels added.
“We heard of a guy who had a storage
container truck service and he lost about
40 or more brand new trucks.”
Even though the weather has been in
Bartels’ favor, another much smaller
storm delayed progress for 10 hours. He
also got lost once.
“You can get lost in this city real easy.
You take one wrong turn and you can end
up in the middle of New York City. When
we came out the tunnel, we were two
blocks from Times Square and it took one
hour for us to get out with this big truck,”
Bartels said.
While on a job, Bartels and the other
drivers will remove boats and vehicle’s
from yards and homes if a person requests
it.
“When you have a 40-ton rotator with
a boom in your yard people need help
removing it. We don’t know who owns it,
so we just place it on the side of the street,”
he said. “We are down here on a job, but
more so to help people get checks from the
insurance companies for their damages.”
Bartels is working anywhere from 12 to
17-hour days, running a flat bed truck in
and out to pick up about 15 cars and trucks
a day.
“I like doing this. I was a volunteer fire
fighter in Port Lavaca for 11 to 12 years and
it’s a good feeling to help people. It will all
come back. If you help someone, you will
be helped in the long run. I love helping
people. It is something I do,” he said.
