correspondent of that newspaper spent
twadays interviewing insurgent lead-
ers. As a result the ourruapondent says
he discovered evidences of jealousy of
the American invasion, but no actual
anti-American feeling. The diiqatch
adds:
“Aguinaldo to respectful towards
Dewey, Merritt and Consul Wildman,
and will go any length to retain Wild-
man’s good opinion, but holds back from
giving energetic help to U mted States
forces. He gives only a negative sort of
assistance until he knows the exact form
which the American policy will take.
He 1s distorted by the telegraphic to-
ports that the United States will aban-
don the islands and return them to
Spain. There are some indications of
a clash between Merritt and Agui-

Cleveland, 0., Aug. B.—A strike has
been formally declared by the Federated
Wire Trades union at the works of the
H. P. Nail company and the American
Wire company, both of which are now
under control of the recently formed
wire and nail trust. The strike throws
about >100 men out of employment. The
cause of the strike to alleged to be a gen-
eral ent of 891^ per cent in wages, and
a threat to cut 20 per cent more.
