other students in over 500 locations
across the United States to launch
helium-filled balloons at 12:30 p.m.
Monday.
Sponsored by the Triangle Coali-
tion for Science and Technology
Education, the balloon launch is a
nationwide science project which
marks the opening day of National
Science Week from Maine to Hawaii
and from Texas to Alaska.

The Gregory-Portland High
School Mathematics Club recogniz-
ed winners of several league con-
tests recently, presenting trophies to
the outstanding students concluding
the six-meet Texas State
Mathematics League competition
for grades eight through 12.
Students in grades eight and nine
who excelled in the five-meet Con-
tinental Mathematics League
Pythagorean Division and in the
five-meet National Mathematics
League competition (Algebra I divi-
sion) also were recognized.
Winning individual awards in the
Texas State Mathematics Lehgue
competition were Kevin Sutton, first
place, and John McKinnie, second
place, 12th-grade division; Fred
Cimo, first, and Frank Rinaldi, se-
cond, llth-grade division; Walter
Harrier, first, and Paul Gidden, se-
cond, in the lOth-grade division; and
Anthony Armont, first, and Anthony
Cimo, second, in the ninth-grade
division.
Fred Cimo also was named
outstanding student in TSML. On
three occasions, he was listed as a
leading scorer in the state by league
headquarters.
In the Continental Mathematics
League competition, trophies were
presented to Mary Cimo, first,
Aaron Bos, second, and Brian
Romero and Mark Gansle, tie for
third place, in the eighth-grade
Pythagorean division.
In the ninth-grade pythagorean
division, there was a three-way tie
for first place between Anthony Ar-
mont, Bonnie Kalich and Barbie
Petkus.
In the National Mathematics
League competition of the Algebra I
division, trophies were presented to
Jason Stavinoha, first; Anthony Ar-
mont, Anthony Cimo and Bonnie
Kalich, tie for second place; and
Mark Gansle, third place.

laboratory experiments, he noted.
Programs on a variety of topics will
be available.
Kalich said trophies will be award-
ed for learning the chemical sym-
bols for the elements, laboratory
procedures and subject content.

Posas Receives
A&l Scholarship
Hilda Posas of Portland has been
awarded an accounting society
scholarship for the 1986-87 academic
year at Texas A&I University.
Only a few weeks remain to enroll
in the Summer Science and Math
Enrichment program, announced
Larry Kalich, high school math
chairman.
Enrollment in the course is on a
first-come basis.
Kalich said this year’s program
will include science, which will in-
clude daily laboratory experiments
or demonstrations. Lab experiments
will include such topics as density —
will it float?, making slime,
chemical reactions, pH of common
household chemicals and more.
A field trip to Padre Island also is
being planned, he said. Kalich said
he hopes it will inblude seining at
Bird Island Basin, hikes through the
dunes, a discovery walk on Padre
Island and chemical testing on the
ocean water itself.___________________
