The JCC presented statistics of
hunger issues in each of the cities
and states that the athletes hailed
from, bringing the issue ‘home’ for
all. Participants all viewed a video
message from Temple Emanu-El’s
Rabbi Debra Robbins, hosted from
the Vickery Meadows Food Pantry
and Clothes Closet.

Earlier this month, more than
1,000 Dallas Maccabi participants,
coaches and volunteers helped feed
the hungry with goodness, grace,
loving kindness and tender mercy,
as is shared in the Birkat Hamazon,
our grace after meals.
With a JCC Cares Day dedicated
to packing meals for food pantries,
planting and seeding a harvest,
and packing meals for home-
bound seniors, Aug. 5 was a caring
spirit completed in mission.
“This was a very, very powerful
day and I’m sure the impact
will be lasting for everyone who
participated,” said Lizzy Rosenberg
Greif, who co-chaired the day with
Sally Rosenberg, working with
the Dallas JCC’s Director of Israel
Engagement and Jewish Living
Rachelle Weiss Crane, noting
the day focused on hunger and
food insecurity in Dallas and all
communities participating in the
2015 JCC Maccabi Games.
“Hunger isn’t a

Our tradition teaches that ‘Adam
and Eve brought forth food from
the earth by the sweat of their
brows’ and it’s hard work. There’s
an urgency to feeding the hungry
— think of Abraham and Sarah
who rushed from their tent to
make sure that their guests, and
the people in their community,
had plenty to eat when they were
hungry.”
Forty-nine million Americans
are considered “food-insecure,”
and one in four children in Dallas
are in that count, not knowing
where their next meal will come
from.
“Kids ask me
person doing one
day, make a difference and indeed
it’s a huge challenge in the world,”
said Rabbi Robbins. “The work of
feeding the hungry is sacred work.”
Michael Fleisher, executive
director of Jewish Family Service
of Dallas, which provides meals
to more than 4,000 food pantry
clients each year, expressed thanks
to the Maccabi participants and
the JCC for “the tremendous
efforts and results of the Maccabi
Games food drive.”
“Our clients will be the fortunate
beneficiaries of over $2,300 worth
of beans, rice, peanut butter and
other staples from the Maccabi
Games participants’ generosity
and hard work. The donations,
which arrived so well organized
and packaged, also brought joy to
our pantry volunteers.
“We thank the JCC for
including the Jewish Family
Service Food Pantry in this most
wonderful event,” said Fleisher,
“and we trust the athletes will
remember their Dallas visit as one
of fun competition, friendship, and
moments that made a meaningful
difference to our community and
to themselves as volunteers.”
