As everyone gears up to gather around
a television to cheer on their favorite team
during Super Bowl 50 this Sunday, at least
one Gainesville firefighter will be drawing
numbers for a football board to help an Era
couple who lost their home and belongings
to an early morning fire last month.
Clint Brown said he came up with the
idea of a charity football board a week
after Gene and Virginia “Ginny”
Huckabee lost their home of 23 years
together.
The family believes the Jan. 4 fire was
caused by a heater on their back porch.
He said the goal is to sell 100 squares at
$100 a pop to raise $10,000. As of
Tuesday afternoon, Brown had 40 squares
left to sell.
“The home was built in the early 1900s
and had a wood burning stove,” Brown
said. “They were not able to afford [home]
insurance. It was so high.... I don’t remem-
ber exactly what it was they told me....we
are just trying to help em’ out and get them
somewhere to live.”
The plan is pay out $1,000 a quarter
and give the remaining balance of $6,000
