town like Missoula. This is a good
town, a school town, and with the
faithful saints that are now work-

better building but they are ask-

auricular confession (funnelling all your sins and
shirtcomings into the ears of some particular •
church official). 1315 AD; and sprinkling for bap-
tism, IS 11 AD. It took rioo yean for this human*
, ly-arranged doctrinal system to develop, The doc-
trinal system of the New Testament church was
complete when the New Testament was complet-
ed in 96 AD. All these practices that came ta since
96 AD are purely human in origin and arrange-
ment.
God has certainly given us sufficient warning
about these modem practices ta religion. Paul, an
inspired man, sounded a word of warning for said
he: ", . . though we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel unto you than that which
we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
(Gal. 1:8) It Isa dangerous, thing to trifle with the •
word of God.
Peter Not Supreme — No Saoeeseer
It has been assumed that the apostle Peter was
supreme In authority and that Peter was to have
an unbroken chain of successors who were to like-
wise be supreme in the realm of religion. I chal-
lenge such an assumption and call for proof. The
apostle Peter wes a co-worker of the apostles and
not a superior to them. There Is but one case of
apostolic succession and that was because Judas ■
Iscariot “fell by transgression that he might go to
his own place.” The reason for Matthias’ taking
Judas* place is obvious.
(1) Judas had failed to fulfill his apostleship;
(2) the Lord required twelve men to be filled with
the Spirit and to sit on twelve thrones to Judge
the twelve tribes of Israel in the beginning of the
regeneration period ( Matt. 19:28). This regenera-
tion period started when men and women wen
first regenerated or bom again into the New
Testament church. When the first sermon was
preached on Pentecost, the people had extended to
them for the first time the privilege of obedience
to the gospel of Christ by which they could be re- *
generated. The record says, “Peter stood up with
the eleven,” showing that all the twelve had the
authority to speak and did speak, for they "heard
them’’ (the apostles) "speak in every tongue
wherein they were bom” (Acta 2).
They were endued with “power from on high”
and were to reveal the law of God to the world
steeped in sin. They told the Israelites on that day
who were there from every tribe and from every
■ nation under heaven what they had to do ta order
to be saved from alien sins. In this way the twelve
were seated upon twelve thrones and they Judged .
the twelve tribes of Israel, the Jews, on that day.
All who obeyed the gospel were Judged as saved
from their alien sins; all-who rejected their words
were Judged as sinners in the sight of God. The
apostles were inspired and, therefore, were right
in offering these conditions, being guided by the
Holy Spirit sent down from heaven.
Paul was a specif apostle to the Gentiles (Acte
15). He was not under the authority of Peter or
any of the other apostles. Paul said, "I conferred
not with flesh and blood: neither went I up to
Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me,
but I went into Arabia, and returned again into
Damascus. *“ *' _ "________ _____

Fifty sermon outlines based on
prominent passages and oven to In
James the Lord’s brother” (Gal. 1:1ft, 19).
Here we learn that Paul was preaching three
years before meeting Peter or any other apostle.
He offered this as an argument to prove his apos-
tolic authority. That what he received and preach-
ed was not learned from men — not oven the in-
spired apostles which were at Jerusalem. Then
Paul tells of his trip to Jerusalem to find Peter
and the apostles instead of going to Rome. Paul
had already been in Rome and had preached to
the church there, yet he goes to Jerusalem to see
Peter and the apostles who were stationed with the
first church.
Paul speaks of the-power that was ta the, apostle
Peter when he went to preach to the Jews and
said, "The same was mighty in me toward the
Gentiles: And when James, Cephas, and John, who
seemed to be pillars, perceivecTthe grace that was
« given unto me, they gave to me apd Barnabas the
right hands of fellowship; That we should go unto
the heathen, and that they unto the circumcision,
only they would that we should remember the
poor; the same which I also was forwaal.to do.”
(Gal. 2:7-10) Notice that Peter was co-pillar and
co-spokesman with James and John.
No superiority is manifested ta the revelation of
God, either here or at any other time. But Paul
does tell* of Peter’s being rebuked by him. "But
when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him
to the face, because he was to be blamed.” (Gal.
2:11) Paul toll! the Corinthian brethren of his
apostolic authority. None could have been greater,
whether it be Peter, James, John or any other.
Paul said, “For in nothing am I behind the very
chiefest apostles” (2 Cor. 12:11).
Peter Was A Married Man
Those who hold Peter as superior in authority
deny ills supposed successors, yea, all the “clergy”
of this particular religious body, the right to mar-
ry. The Bible says, “Peter’s wife’s mother lay sick
of a ever.’ (Mark 1:30) According to this, Peter
’ bad a wife. One time a certain religious leader
tried to prove that Peter’s wife had died. He said,
“If Peter had a wife, she had died." You might as
well say, “if Peter had a mother-in-law," as to
say, “If Peter had a wife." But let’s Just say, for
instance, Peter’s wife had died before Mark wrote
this record and see if it helps the theory any.
Paul was unmarried, but he claimed the power
or privilege to marry if he so desired. He wrote the
letter to the Corinthians about thirty years after
Mark wrote his book. Hear Paul: “Have We not
power (the right) to lead about, a sister, a wife, as
well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the
Lord, and Cephas (or £eter)?’’ (1 Cor. 9:5)
May I say, “If Peter’s wife had died before Mark
wrote, he certainly married again,” for the re-
cord shows that he was “leading about a wife” at
the time Paul wrote to the Corinthians thirty years
after Mark had concluded his record. What do you
suppose would happen if one of the “clergy" of a
certain church should demand his right to marry
and should marry? He would be expelled from
his office, no doubt about It.
Paul was unmarried but he did not serve as a
bishop or elder of any church. He was an apostle,
not an elder, from an official standpoint. Yet he
claimed the power or privilege to marry if he
