D. L. Hsrguess, Jr, above, is
preaching for the small church in
Pocatello, Idaho, which is badly in
need of help.
We eannot get any program of
the church of Christ here on our
radios at all. The nearest con-
gregation south of hfere is Salt
Lake City, Utah, 176 miles; west
it - is 125 miles to Twin Falls,
Idaho; North St. Maries, Idaho,
miles; and east Green River,
Wyoming. 225 miles. And it is to
be kept Jn mind, some of these
congregations are so small they
do not have a place of their own
to meet.
flee on the part of all interested
to support the work here.
Nearby Towns Never Had Gospel
There are a number of small
towns of from 5,000 to 13,000
population around here that have
never had the gospel preached
within their limits.-With a little
help from Individuals or small
congregations we would be able
to spread the gospel to thousands.
We can buy radio time for $5.00 |
for 15 minutes if we can sign
a contract for a year.
‘ In"the near future, it is our,
desire to purchase a wire record-
er. This we think will aid the
study greatly. The wire that re-
cords the voice or voices can be
used over and over again. We
also need such a machine for the
speech work that will be given
at Shion Gakuen. We hope that
this class will be a source of
much blessing to the churches of
Christ in Japan. We want our
brethren to stand on their own
feet to be the means of spreading
the Kingdom of Christ through-
put all Asia. To this end we press.
Pray for thia effort.
The church is greatly handi-
capped because of finances.
Preachers who have been here
have been forced to work part
or full time for their support.
I am now giving my full time
to the work here but I don’t know
how long I will be able tb do so
as it is an exceeding great sacri-
I am happy to see the reports
of the work abroad but I fear
many are passing up one of the
greatest fields in the w.orld. Here
in Pocatello, Idaho, there are
only about 25 members of the
church. Some of these are un-
faithful. The population here is
31,000 and Alemeda, a suburb,
is 12,000 tp 15,000. About 45,000
or 46,000 people and only 25 mem-
bers of the church.
criticism. Singing hymns is new
to most Japanese people. Their
heathen religions never gave them
anything to sing about. There is
a fine Hymn Book in the Japa-
nese language which contains
about 600 hymns. '
Wire Recorder Needed
Will someone take advantage
of the opportunity to help In the
work in the great northwest?
Send preachers up here to help
work, or help support the few
that are here already. We would
be more than happy to correspond
with those interested in the work
here. Or if anyone is wanting •
to move to a section of the coun-
try where their talent can be
used and they can be of great
help to the cause, let us hear

Christ. Although certain provi-
sions are being made for such
training in the College, not all
of the brethren who should have
this training are College students.
It is necessary for the church to
have leadership now. The oldest
attendant of this class is 70. This
brother was baptized last sum-
mer during our meeting at Tags.
He is very zealous for Christ and
comes to study along* with the
young men. He has a white beard
and twinkling eyes. He makes
fine talks now. The wonderful
thing about our brethren here is
the fact that they will not refuse
to do anything in the work of
Christ. They all lead singing, and
they all preach.
........... We are. drilling them with
the importance of knowing the
word of God, and instilling in
them a reverence for its au-
thority. They are being ac-
quainted with the arguments
of* denofnlnationallsm because
that plague exists here also,
and the time may come when
the church in Japan will be
tested for its soundness in the
faith. Some of the students
memorize their scriptures in
English. Of course, most of the
work is done in Japanese. As
yet we are not so fluent with
the language and require the
help of interpreters. The two
brothers that interpret are
Brother Fukuda and Brother
Nagano. They work very hard
In the cause of Christ, and
without their help our work
would be seriously handicapped.
Fortunately, most of the bre-
thren can read English, and
we have secured sermon out-
line hooks to aid them in their
work. Already we have used
some of them in preaching
amongst the churches, especial-
ly during prayer-meetings when
the brethren exhort one an-
other.
Before the classes begin, we
conduct a song-drill. The brethren
lead various songs and receive

numerous, and that the church
is working for the salvation of
the world as it has never
worked before in these modern
times, but that does not keep
me from saying that Japan is
calling. These people are giv-
ing a “Macedonian Call” if. I
have ever heard one.
We sincerely believe that if
the church is made strong in J a-
pan it will be the means of
"ipreading the gospel ,all over
Asia, and someday Japanese New
Testament Christians will be
working in every, epuntry of the
East. Again you may think,
“What a wild statement,” but
listen, our Japanese brethren are
zealous, faithful and intelligent.
They possess great potentialities.
Their energy was demonstrated
in' a sinful way during the past
war. This energy coupled with
faith in God will do things. Bre-
thren, bring the gospel to Japan,
and bring it now.
Our Preacher’s Study
Class in Japan
A few months ago, Virgil Law-
yer and I started a study class
foi* preachers. This class is held
once every week for two hours.
During this time brother Lawyer
drills the brethren on scriptures
and sermon delivery, while I han-
cile the preparation and organiza-
tion of lessons. The classes are
conducted in the High School
building of Shion Gakuen at Oml-
ca. We have 25 men who are
members of this class, and our
attendance averages al
every time we meet. The
We had the^pieasure of baptiz-
ing seven souls into Christ the
past week. This brings the total
number of converted in this area
to 194. Brothers Doyle, Lawyer
and I have been working in the
Hitachi-Taga area of I b a r a k i
State for almost a year. Within
that time God has multiplied the
- Word. ’ . .
Our contacts, with the othir
work being done by the brethren
in Japan, bring the total number
of _con versions that have taken
place to 425. This is evidence of
the way in which the Japanese
people are receiving the gospel
of Christ There is no reason why
this couldn’t be done all over
Japan. ■'
■ There are thousands of cities
* and towns in which churches of
Christ could be established. The
opportunities are unlimited. The
need »is for more workers. Are
there not Christians in America
who will come ? Teachers and
preachers of the gospel are ur-
gently needed. This is not a wild
appeal designed to obtain money.
Nor is it made with a desire by
the writer to receive some “lime-
light.” I am urgently asking you
to Consider giving your life to
working in Japan. Please * seri-
ously consider what I am saying.
This is a critical hour in the
history of Japan. This genera-
tion is seeking after God. Of
course not all of them are, cer-
tainly, but so many of them
are that It grieves our hearts
day by day to realize that so
few are coming to this wide
open field. The chureh could
sow these islands down with
the gospel in ten years If we
had brethren working In all
the states of Japan. I realize
also that appeals like this are
