of Inspiration have ceased. Miracles are no longer
performed through men as they once were. Paul
taught in I Corinthians 13 that they were to
cease “when that which is perfect has come,”
and James informs us that the perfect law of
liberty has come. (Jas. 1:25).
However, the Holy Spirit not only inspired
those men In their preaching, but he also in-
spired them in their writing. When they wrote
the different books that compose the scriptures,
they were guided by the Spirit. What they wrote
is just as surely the word of the Spirit as what
HoTy
Spifit. In Heb. 3:7-8 a quotation is made from
the Old Testament and ascribed to the Spirit.
In 2 Timothy 3:16 the claim is made that the
scriptures are inspired and that they are able
to furnish us unto every good work.
Ii> 2 Peter 1:21 we are told that “the pro-
phecy came not in old time by the will of man:
but holy men of God spake as they were moved
by the Holy Ghost.” In Revelation 2 and 3 we
have the letters which were written by John to
the seven churches of Asia, Again and again he
says “He that hath an ear, let him hear what
the Spirit saith to the churches.” They were to
hear what the Spirit said to the churches by
reading that which John wrote to them, for
he was guided by the Holy Spirit. If one would
hear what the Spirit says today, he must read
that which the Spirit wrote through inspired
men.
Now it is easily seen why the different items
that are ascribed to the Spirit in conversion are
also ascribed to the word. Jesus says we must

be born of the Spirit and Peter says we are boon
of the word. (Jno. 3:5; I Peter 1:23). Jesus prayed
for God to sanctify through his word, and Paul
taught that sanctification is by the Spirit. (Jno.
17:17; I Cor. 6:11). The last two passages teach
the truth so plainly that it cannot be misunder-
stood. Paul said sanctification is by the Spirit
and Jesus said it is through the word. Both are
correct. The Spirit accomplishes it through the
word, but never separate and apart from the
word. The word is said to be the sword of the
Spirit. (Eph. 6:17).
The Spirit Is a person; the word is an in-
strument—it is the sword. The Spirit cuts the
heart of the sinner, but always by using the
sword, never without the sword. If an man by
using an axe cuts doWn a tree, it could be said
that the tree was rut down by an nxe or that t
was cut down by the man. Both would be cor-
rect. The man is a person; the ake is an instru-
ment. The man wields an influence upon the’
tree, but only through the instrument. The theory
of the direct and miraculous operation of the
Holy Solrit Insists that the Spirit cuts the heart
without th* Sword!
The Bible teaches incontroyertibly that he
influences sinners only through the word, which
is his sword. It is a case of an intelligent per-
sonality addressing the hearts and consciences
of intelligent men and pleading with them to turn
from sin. When men hear this intelligent person-
- ality, the Holy Spirit, and obey his teachings,
they are led from darkness to light. “As many
as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the
sons of God.” (Romans 8:14). ,
