heard the birds making all
kinds of noises and in the small
valleys, we saw the farmers
and their wives knee-deep in
mud as they planted their rice.
After a detour around a bad
non, Robert Yarbrough and I
drove up to the “garden” and
found Masaichi Kikuchi wait-
ing for us.
THIS GARDEN is an old
folks home operated by Kiku-
chi, an outstanding Christian.
It was established 10 years ago
and now has 72 aged ones, 8
buildings, and 12 staff mem-
bers. Besides government sub-
sidy. they are being helped by

eluded with an address by Joe
Cannon from the verse “I, when
I am lifted up from the earth,
will draw all men to myself.”
At the end of the sermon Ki-
kuchi asked all who wished to
be baptized to raise their hands.
Immediately eight responded
and were brought to the front
of the group. Cannon took
their confessions. It was won-
derful to hear those old
wrinkled mouths saying “I be-
lieve”.
I was amazed later to find
that this day’s conversions
would bring the number of
Christians among the old peo-
ple to 100%. This makes the
old folks’ home the largest
church in Ibaraki ken.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE for
this successful conversion of all
the aged at the “Garden1 of the
Nazarene”? Massaichi Kiku-
chi was bom in 1907. He was
ville, Tenn.
This day was a very special
day for Kikuchi and the old
folks there. They had invited
the American missionaries to
come and dedicate the new
chapel building with worship to
God on the Lord’s Day. This
bright new building can seat
around 200 on the Japanese
style “tatami" floor and the
benches at the back of the
building.
There is a beautiful simpli-
city in the architecture and a
combination of the old and new.
Oriental and Western in a very
pleasing and useful way.
