They go only by request in teams of two,
three, or four couples to congregations and
work with the leaders and members of
those congregations in helping them to im-
prove their effectiveness in the service of
the Ix)rd. They remain only as long as they
are needed, usually two to four weeks.
There is absolutely no cost or expense

Already Sojourners have given valuable
assistance to over 40 congregations in
about 10 or 11 states. Some 38 question-
naires were sent out from Weslaco to con-
gregations in 23 states and two Pro-
vidences of Canada who had requested ser-
vices of the Sojourners. Teams are being
formed now for trips to the upper Midwest,
the Northeast and the Eastern Seaboard.

Groundbreaking services at the building site of a new con-
gregation were conducted on April 10 just off the west freeway in
Ft. Worth, Texas.
The West Freeway congregation is to be the result of the
merger of six congregations in Ft. Worth.
Sojourners is a rapidly growing, unique
program of the church in Conroe, Texas, in
which capable and willing retired Chris-
tians can travel in the U.S. and Canada
and render a valuable service in the
kingdom of the Lord at the same time.
Sojourners can provide expert
assistance in some 30 functional areas of
service which are common to most con-
gregations. To know more about services
offered by the Sojourners writs to So-
journers, Frasier Street Church of Christ,

PORTLAND, Ore.—Christians from
throughout the Portland-Vancouver area
gathered this spring to honor Wallace
McNeal upon completion of his fifth year
serving in hospital ministry.
McNeal’s work as a hospital chaplain is
recognised and appreciated not only by
church members, but by the medical staffs
of the 10 Portland hospitals where he
regularly visits all who register as
members of the church of Christ.
Through McNeal’s visits a few people
have been baptised and some inactive
church members have been encouraged to
return to active fellowship with Portland
congregations, said Dan Wheeler, minister
of the Sandy Church of Christ, which
oversees McNeal’s work. However,
Wheeler, said, the main emphasis of
McNeal’s ministry is to provide comfort
and strength.
Yvonne Burger of Portland testified to
McNeal’s skill in that ministry: “I could
always depend on Wallace to come on
Thursdays. He was always the same -
steady and strengthening. He had the abili-
ty to change my thoughts from ordinary
things to things of God, but he was never
preachy.’ He had great insight into the
pain I was experiencing. I will always be
grateful for this man who loves mankind.
He is a good example of what God wants a
man to be.”
The man Portland Christians now praise
as “our chaplain” grew up in a black ghet-
to of Chicago. As a young man, he chose to
follow Christ. After graduating from the
University of Chicago, McNeal worked in
many hospitals as a technician, X-ray
technician and cytologist, studying cells.
After moving to Portland, McNeal
became interested in serving the spiritual
needs of the hospitalised as a chaplain and
received training in that field. In coming
years he hopes to establish a training pro-
gram in which future ministers learn to
work effectively in hospitals with the sick
and dying and their families. McNeal told
the Christiane honoring Mm of Mo dream,
“1 want our young mon to be able to go
anywhere in the world with confidence and
with the needed credentials to work in
hospital ntintotrtoo.”
